Please please anybody I just need to talk this out & either get the slightest ray of hope or be brought back down to reality

Today we were told we lost potential twins at a private scan (UK)

Backstory…

  • LMP 16th December
  • Had sex unprotected once 28th December (didnt do it again that month)
  • Positive pregnancy test 8th Jan
  • Early pregnancy scan with NHS 23rd Jan due to pain. Measured 5w3d, saw sac, yolk sac but no fetal pole. Was told it was normal for this stage of pregnancy
  • Private scan (that was already booked) on 28th Jan. Found a second baby! Again, sac, yolk sac but no fetal pole. First baby had developed but they wouldn’t say for definite in the scan that they were 100% they could see a heartbeat, even though me & my husband could see it. Measured just under 6weeks. They did say there was obvious progression from the nhs scan. Then they sent me the report which said heartbeat recorded so was very confused
  • Back for private rescan today 4th feb. 2nd baby nothing had developed & 1st baby couldn’t see an obvious heartbeat. Measured 6weeks. Haemorrhage also found 21x11mm next to first baby

Is there any ray of light in this? Should there have been more obvious progression in a week? I don’t know if I’m just in complete denial but i’m struggling to trust what the private scanner said as they wouldn’t commit to seeing a 1st heartbeat in person but then changed their mind when sending the report to us

I’m phoning EPU tomorrow. If it is an obvious miscarriage then I just want it over with, no watching & waiting. My heart can’t take it. But i don’t want to make a decision that i’ll regret forever

Sorry I know all this is word vomit but I’m really struggling. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much xx

I have no advice or similar experiences unfortunately but I really feel for you, this must be really really difficult. If you need someone to message and vent to, I'd be happy to listen

I had a similar situation. At 5 weeks and 6 days, there was only one gestational sac visible with a suggestion of a heart beat but there was no clear yolk sac. A week later there were two gestational sacs, one empty & one with an embryo and heartbeat. In the second gestational sac, there was never really an embryo & it was gone by the 12 weeks. So please try to remain calm, it is still very very early.

Please try to rest as much as you can due to the haemorrhage.

Although having said try to remain calm, I wasn’t very calm at all & spent £100s on pregnancy tests because I was so afraid. But what helped calm me down was accepting that I was unable to influence the outcome at this stage & to make a plan for the next pregnant in case it didn’t work out. (Have had 2 previous miscarriages, so I knew that I could survive the emotional pain)

It feels unlikely that the private scan got this wrong - they normally don't say there's been a loss lightly. But often scans are inconclusive at an early stage. You are doing the right thing to speak to the early pregnancy unit and they will be able to confirm. If it is a miscarriage then they will go through options for what's next straight after the scan. I have had this (with a singleton pregnancy) and they were helpful.

Sorry that this is happening and it's so hard. I really hope that there is a better outcome for you.
