Craving ice and crunchy things

I'm 35 weeks with second baby, and in the last few weeks I can't get enough of ice cubes.. chewing on them - they need to be thin and crispy. Also loving brushing my teeth, the feeling of the toothbrush and the thought of crunching on anything that could be crunchy.. the thoughts of a hardback sponge are also really nice too (I understand how crazy this makes me seem but I can't help it!)

I've heard ice craving can be a sign of low iron but my HB was 12 at my 18 week checkup. Could it have dropped to be anaemic since then?

Did anyone else have any weird cravings?

I'll mention it at my next appointment but curious if others experienced this

I loved chewing wet flannels and sponges. Still do, actually. If they’re clean then go for it!

For a different kind of crunchiness I often had a small cupful of frozen fruit, the kind you make into smoothies or thaw out to put on cheesecake. Raspberries were my favourite but Sainsburys do an excellent forest fruits one.

Could definitely be low iron, I had this last time and my iron was non existent

Yes, I had the ice cube craving, totally loved it. Also packets and packets of watercress (I may have been low on iron!)
Both cravings disappeared within 24 hours of delivery. Still a bit sad about that. I mean, I do still like watercress but I can live without it.

Nothing to do which your hb. It’s your iron levels that may be low.

Definitely a sign of iron deficiency and not anaemia.

I've had the exact same craving and it turns out my ferritin (iron stores) has dropped from 35 at my booking appointment to 6 at 30 weeks. Push for another blood test if you can as you'll want them up in time for the birth - I'm feeling thoroughly washed out and looks like I'll need an iron transfusion!

Nuts. The ones with crispy coating (Japanese style, I think).
Tortilla chips. Pretzels. Thai Prawn Crackers. Italian crisp bread.

I craved fizzy water but only a certain type with the perfect fizz and bubble size!

coffeewithmilk · 04/02/2024 15:58

@UpUpUpU the kind of fizzy water that almost burns your throat when you're gulping it - I have that too currently, forgot to add it into my original post!

Thanks everyone for making me feel like I'm not a total weirdo - will ask for another blood test when I'm in clinic next week!

I craved ice.....I prefer some shapes over others!

I’m also nearly 35 weeks and the exact same, it’s been going on for weeks and I’ve had 2 blood tests in that time both showing iron as fine.
crushed ice is the best or ice cubes that have slightly melted so they crunch more 😆
I also love the smell of washing powders etc I did have that with my DD as well but never the ice obsession like I have with this one (DS this time)
