Is sex safe in pregnancy?

We’ve not had sex since I tested positive. I do want to but I am worried it will cause harm to the pregnancy… will it be ok? I’m 5 weeks, for reference.

Thank you

It’s fine.

Absolutely safe unless you suffer from a very small number of complications. You'd be told if it wasn't safe.

JDJT · 04/02/2024 09:36

Yes. Most people carry on doing it throughout pregnancy. We did the deed even a few hours before I went into labour (perhaps it helped as I had a really quick and easy labour!)

It's fine. In fact I found it amazing all the way through!!

Turtlegurl888 · 04/02/2024 09:38

It is, but be prepared to possibly experience some spotting afterwards.

It's perfectly fine, with my son's pregnancy we had more sex than ever (hormones!) And he's a healthy 5 year old who came at 38 weeks and 7lbs no issues. I'm 31 weeks with my daughter and still have sex fairly regularly, no issues.

Have you had sex since the first trimester right from the beginning? This is so reassuring to hear thank you so much

I appreciate everyone’s comments! It’s just so easy to worry about everything

It’s fine to do it but I didn’t like it because orgasms caused intense Branston Hicks for me - not painful but just really uncomfortable.

Ttcmumma · 04/02/2024 10:15

@Bebebaba yep! All trimesters. Sometimes a little less in the first but purely because of nausea or exhaustion lol but definitely all trimesters x

I had it all the way through from finding out to the night before I was induced. Best sex in my opinion

excitedmama2be · 04/02/2024 10:37

Yes but be prepared that it can trigger off cramps and spotting

ceruleansky · 04/02/2024 10:39

I was asked not to have sex the first trimester. During my NT scan at 13 weeks, my cervix was measured and it's a bit short, so my gynaec asked me to continue not having sex. It's been 3+ months! So sometimes it's a risk factor, depending on your body.

Totally agree with this. I also had sex up until night before I was induced.

Can have have as much sex whenever without worrying about your period or getting pregnant lol

We didn't have sex at first but that was because my first pregnancy was ectopic and we wanted to wait until after the location scans as sex isn't recommended if you have an ectopic (not that we felt like having any when mine was diagnosed).

Otherwise, it's safe to have sex during pregnancy unless you're advised not to for a particular reason. Your midwife or obstetrician will tell you if you do have to abstain.

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 04/02/2024 16:00

We had sex in the beginning. Then I was diagnosed with placenta previa and was bleeding so it was a no no (and hospital recommended not to). Placenta moved 28 weeks so started having sex again. Had sex up until a couple days before I gave birth. If you have issues with cervix or waters break or something then it's a no, but you can have sex in most pregnancies and even if not up to it and stop for a while you can go back to it!
