Scan missed a twin?

At 5 weeks I had an internal scan because I had some bleeding and pain on one side. So essentially I was getting checked for ectopic pregnancy. The doctor said the baby was in the right place and the scan lasted 2 minutes. I have a lot of twins from both my mother and fathers side. Including my mother being a twin herself. So there could be a chance I get pregnant with twins too but after that scan surely the doctor would have told me I'm having twins? Or is it too early to tell because even a fetal pole or heartbeat wasn't seen. I'm now 8 weeks pregnant and would just like to know so I can take extra care and increase my folic acid.

There might not have been an heartbeat yet at 5 weeks.
This said, the neural tube is well completed at 8 weeks, so you don't need any extra folic acid for the baby or the twins. Folic acid matters in the first 27 days of conception.

How would you take extra care if it was twins?
Seems an odd thing to say, surely you are taking care of yourself anyway 🤷🏻

Sometimes they can't be seen at that gestation, I have twins and another twin mum friend of mine had one baby confirmed at a 6w scan and at 12w there were two. They aren't always conceived at the same time so could be different gestations too, especially if you have a history of fraternal twins in your family.
