What week can an external scan be done

Planning on paying for a private ultrasound. Had one at 7 weeks but had alot of on going cramping and due to my lack of symptoms I want some reassurance. If I have a scan at 11 weeks exactly would it have to be internal ? Or would they be able to use external at that point . I have a very tilted uterus and at my 7 week scan they found it really difficult to get an image of baby so I didn't feel assured. I want the scan before the new year . My nhs scan won't be until mid January and I don't want to wait.
We are having a family get together for new years and I know its going to be questioned if I'm pregnant. I haven't seen anyone since we did ivf and nobody knows we did it. Theres no way i can cover up my huge stomach. I developed ohss from my ivf cycle which has left me swollen and now I have pregnancy bloat on top of it . I look way further along than I actually am. I look like a have a pregnancy bump of a second trimester and I feel really awkward people asking me if I'm pregnant and then lying to them. I've never lied to my family. I'd to get know baby is doing ok so we can share it with them. I'd be 11 weeks exactly at time of availabile scan slot. The could offer one earlier I'd be 10 weeks but I just don't want to waste £85 on another internal so want external. What week can this be done

With my youngst child it worked fine with an external scan at 11 weeks.
Call a clinic and ask for advice.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I think you'd be fine for an external at 11 weeks, I also have a tilted uterus and even so my 8 week scan was done externally. They may not be able to see masses of detail but should be able to tell you all is well and see heartbeat etc. Congratulations and good luck!

I had an external scan at 10 weeks and was all good! Just made sure I had a reasonably full bladder as that's meant to help

PickledScrump · 15/12/2023 13:47

my second and third I had external scans at 8 weeks and could see everything very clearly. 11 weeks you’ll be fine

I had an external scan at 7+3 and 10+5 and baby was easily visible and both times X

I had a private scan done at 11 weeks and that was only external, they got a brilliant view of my baby. I imagine they’d be able to do external a couple of weeks earlier than that x

8 weeks

Thankyou for your responses. That's interesting that some of you had external scans at 7 and 8 weeks

My first scan was 7+4 and they did an internal. We couldn't really make out the baby as they said my uterus is so badly tilted. They never even attempted an external for us so I didn't feel like I got an reassurance from my first scan

At 6 weeks, my hospital started external, and went for internal when they couldn't see anything.
With DS1 and DS2, scans at 6 weeks (for medical reasons from above) were all external only.

I'd be very surprised if they did internal at 11 weeks.

I saw a blob with a heartbeat externally at 6+6 so you should be fine at 11 😊

I had an external at 8 weeks
