Brown discharge and slight cramping at 10 weeks

Hello everyone! I was hoping to hear some positive stories because I’m a little anxious. I had a miscarriage last year and now pregnant again at 10 weeks and 2 days. Last night I went to the bathroom and had brown discharge when I wiped. I also had slight cramps that come and go. This afternoon it seems like the brown discharge has eased off but still have that on and off cramping. Of course this happened on the weekend so I have to wait to see if my doctor can see me tomorrow.

Everything that I have read says brown discharge is somewhat normal as long as there is no cramping. Did anyone have brown discharge and some cramping and had a healthy pregnancy? Thank you!

Hi OP, go see your doctor soon as you can.
I had some brown discharge at 7 weeks and got referred to our local early pregnancy unit. Scan confirmed we were pregnant and baby had a heartbeat and I'm currently feeding that baby right now. I did have some very mild cramping around this time.
The phrase that got used a lot was "it's common, but not normal" so it happens a lot even in healthy pregnancies but always something you should check out.
I remember doing the same searches, it's really scary, but sometimes it is just a bit of unexplained bleeding. Hoping it's the same with you.

Thank you for responding. I'm trying not to freak out. I'll call my doctor tomorrow. I just went to the bathroom again and just a little showed up. I guess I should also mention I had a ultrasound at 8.3 weeks and everything was great. I hope everything turns out positive. I'm glad it was a happy ending for you!

Aw darling, it's such an anxious time! I had brown discharge and even some red blood (which they say is more of a bad sign) from 6 weeks to 9 weeks and then again around 20/1 weeks. My 6 month old is currently snoring away!

I can't remember it being accompanied by cramping, but I had bad cramping at 5 weeks and I have a friend whose cramping was so bad she went to a & e at 10 weeks. As previous poster said, it can be quite common, but still fight to be seen to put your mind at rest. The most reassuring thing is that you've already seen a heartbeat! Wishing you all the best, it can feel especially isolating at the beginning when you're not seen as much by midwife. Here if you have any more questions xx

Thank you for being so kind with your response. I really hope it's a positive outcome, I'm still having really minor cramps in and out. I'll have to call my doctor tomorrow, hopefully she can see me and give me a requisition for an ultrasound.

Has anyone else had brown discharge and cramping?

Hi OP, I’m going through similar too at the moment. I had two lots of brown vaginal discharge, one on Saturday morning and one on Sunday morning, both after bowel movements (sorry, TMI!). I’m 11+2 today.

I panicked and phoned maternity triage (our community midwives aren’t around on Saturdays), who said to phone 111. I had a call back from a lovely maternity 111 person (not sure what her exact role was) who was so reassuring and lovely. The only thing she wantsd to check my blood pressure, so she sent me to the local out of hours GP.

The GP was less reassuring, to be honest, but said that she’d try and get my scan moved forward if I wanted (I was booked for my 12 week scan on 14th Dec). My blood pressure and heart rate are fine and I had no pain when the GP felt around my abdomen.

I’m waiting for a call from the EPU today to find out when they can see me for a scan. If they can’t see me soon, I’m going to book a private one because I’m going out of my mind with worry (but I’ve always been one of life’s worriers).

Take good care and hope things progress OK for you. Keep us updated x

@DevonMum2Be I'm so sorry to hear that! I totally understand why you would be worried. Everything I read from forums and other documents state that when you have a bowel movement brown discharge can appear. So it may still be good news! Have you had any update?

My mild cramps are basically gone and the brown discharge is also almost gone so I'm hoping that's good news....or that's what I'm telling myself. I have an ultrasound booked for tomorrow at 9:30 so I'm hoping it's positive news for both you and I!

Keep me posted please!

EPU will probably scan you if you call in the morning. Best of luck OP x

NappiesAndBunFluff · 05/12/2023 05:22

Sending you positive thoughts for your scan today <3

Mangotango39 · 05/12/2023 08:33

Good luck op .
I had all sorts of bleeds inc brown discharge and it was luckily all fine. Cause never found x

babyblue915819 · 05/12/2023 17:40

@LittleDoveLove @NappiesAndBunFluff @Mangotango39 thank you all for your kind wishes.

I wanted to give an update from my doctors appointment yesterday and from my ultrasound today. My doctor didn't seem to be worried since it was brown spotting and the cramping. She hesitated to give me a requisition form to get an ultrasound (I live in Canada) but I fought for it...make sure you advocate for yourself.

Today I went to the ultrasound everything was perfect. The baby was moving so much I'm 1 day ahead at 10.5 weeks and the heartbeat was 170.

Thank you again for all your kind words I really appreciate it.

Wonderful news! And yes you really do have to advocate for yourself sometimes, the stress would have driven you mad otherwise! And early pregnancy is stressful enough!

babyblue915819 · 05/12/2023 17:50

@NappiesAndBunFluff I totally agree, it's so stressful to get to the 12 week mark lol.

@DevonMum2Be did you end up getting any news? I hope all is well ❤️

Hi sorry for not replying sooner. I had a scan on Monday morning, I should’ve been 11+2 and am measuring only 6. I’m having to wait for another scan on Monday but it doesn’t look like anything will change and the pregnancy is not viable. We had no idea anything was wrong until the brown blood on Saturday morning at exactly 11 weeks. I’m so sorry not to update with good news, we’re heartbroken and I wish it were different.

NappiesAndBunFluff · 07/12/2023 21:03

@DevonMum2Be sorry to hear you've not had positive news. Sending you love

babyblue915819 · 08/12/2023 01:39

@DevonMum2Be I'm so sorry to hear the outcome I wasn't expecting that. Sending you a lot of love sis ❤️
