Ask for gender at a 16 week NHS scan?

Hi everyone!
My first 12 week scan with the NHS is actually going to take place when I'm 16 weeks (delayed self-referral)
I know the gender scan is the 20 week scan. But I was wondering if I could request to find out the gender at 16 weeks and if they are allowed to tell me?

thank you

There's no such thing as a gender scan on the NHS. The two scans you have are medical and neither are for the purpose of determining sex.

That said, it is possible to see the sex at 16 weeks, so if they can see something while they take the measurements, then they might let you know. There's no guarantee though and they likely won't spend much (if any) time looking for it.

You can have a private gender scan done if they can't tell you, or wait until your anatomy scan. It's worth pointing out though that there's also no guarantee of finding out at the anatomy scan. Sometimes baby just doesn't want to flash the goods.

Thank you very much! That makes a lot of sense

No no, I meant a scan that will tell me what my child will identify as.

🙄 if you're not taking the piss you're an idiot

She was clearly joking. Not sure why everyone's taking it so seriously.

I had a scan at EPU when I was about 15 weeks because I'd had a fall and when the sonographer said everything seemed fine I said thank god she's ok. She said why do you say she and I said just a feeling, I can't wait to find out for sure and she started to laugh. Needless to say my little boy was absolutely fine 😂

aww sweet!
I'm hoping for a little girl this time around.

it's sex. And it's irresponsible to have a baby if you have a sex preference.

Daisies12 · 24/11/2023 15:22

No scan in the world can predict how your child will chose to express their individual gender identify.

Don’t be so silly. Most people have a preference.

OP some hospitals/trusts won’t even tell you the sex at 20 weeks in case it’s wrong.

MaliciaKeys · 24/11/2023 15:28

I was told my unborn baby was a boy. She wasn't. I was delighted because I had two little boys already, but I can see some people being upset at being given the wrong information.

SarahB88 · 24/11/2023 15:29

Not all NHS areas will tell you the sex either, even at the 20 week scan. Mine doesn’t so we have arranged a private scan.

It’s the minority of NHS areas that don’t and you can easily find online if anyone needs to check.

I found out at my 12 week scan and my 20 week confirmed

DemelzaRobins · 24/11/2023 16:42

I had my 12 week scan this week and the sonographer asked if we wanted to know what they thought baby's sex was. She said she was 80% sure it looks like a little boy (my hospital has a fancy fetal medicine centre and has extra detailed scans). I assume this is just based on nub theory though and they may have a different opinion at the 20 and 36 week scans. Either way, baby currently looks like Mr Burns😂

You can ask but they may not be prepared to give their thoughts before 20 weeks. Not all hospitals will say as policy - my Mum's hospital when she had me had that policy. I think my cousin had the same during her pregnancy about 20 years ago.

CR7 · 24/11/2023 17:48

I didn't want to know but she told me in advance that she wasn't going to if I did want to know.

Could pay for a private test to find out xx

QueenBitch666 · 24/11/2023 17:58

It's sex not gender

This made me laugh a lot.

You seem to have attracted a particularly humourless bunch on this thread.

Good luck! I reckon they'll tell you if they can see it but probably with a caveat.
