MMC but hcg still doubling?

Hi again, so I’m booked in for medical termination next week for MMC. I’ve uploaded my two scans, first one is 5 weeks 2 days, they said they saw fetal pole which I was shocked about and second is a week later with only a 1mm growth which they deemed as non viable. My HCG was drawn privately after this and it’s still doubling and I’m so confused. I know MMC are so hard because you have zero symptoms. I’ve had absolutely no bleeding, no cramping apart from after my first internal scan, nothing to indicate pregnancy loss. I’m just so confused, I’ve now mentally grieved my loss but still thinking what if there’s that 1% that they made a mistake.

Sending you love OP. Could you have a private scan?

NCgoingdry · 09/11/2023 14:22

I'm not a sonographer so I can't comment on the scan growth.

I guess your only option from here would be to request more bloods and another scan.

What a terribly confusing time.

But op you've left all your personal details on the scan pics so you may want to delete that.

Sorry you're going through this.

Sorry to hear this Hun, it's hard at these early stages to see these things. I'm pretty sure hcg can still increase as the reason it's a missed miscarriage is that the baby has stopped developing or died but your body still thinks it's pregnant and the rising hcg is stopping you from miscarrying naturally.

I can understand your concerns at this stage and would say for your own peace of mind, try and get a private scan in quickly before you make any decisions so you don't have to wonder what if x

Hello, have they seen the yolk sac too? It does seem to be rather early to say the pregnancy isnt viable. At 6.2 it is possible that no cardiac activity could suggest a non viable pregnancy but if you are actually a little further behind than you thought it may be that this activity hasnt started yet. If it is an MMC the HC G may well be doubling because MMCs are slightly odd in that your body still thinks you have a viable pregnancy and keeps producing hormones. I recently was diagnosed with one at 12 weeks and the embryo was only 6 weeks but all the hormones had carried on as normal.
I think you should at least have another scan to check before the termination procedure.

Thank you, they’ve offered one last scan next week but they did say it’s pointless as they’re 100% sure it’s non viable 😢

Part of the thing with a MMC is that your body hasn’t realised that it’s miscarried. So it carries on through pregnancy. Hormones carry on, so symptoms carry on.

Ask all the questions you want at EPU. In my experience they are happy to explain/reassure before starting the medical or surgical management route. I had an additional scan one time too. Didn’t ask for it, but they used it help answer my questions.

I’m trying to get a second opinion it’s just really distressing, it’s only my name and dob, no different to what people can see on my Facebook, the hospital is far away so I’m fine leaving it there

This EPU I’ve used have been so horrific, they said straight away pregnancy isn’t viable, took me straight into a room and said we’ll start the process of taking tablets, I asked what had happened etc and they just said no idea. I asked for another scan a week later and they said you’ll probably miscarry naturally by then but I said I wanted to wait, no questions were answered hardly any sympathy, just given a load of leaflets abd told to leave. One thing I found strange was I had asked a few questions this week after speaking to people on here and she said May I ask who you’ve spoken to, is it Mumsnet? She then said I’d stay off that, but if you want a good group then google this group, I googled them and they were a private local group but you had to pay to join?! It’s all been very unprofessional and weird

Honestly I wouldn't be going for the medical treatment if there was any hope, given it is so early. Could you push the appointment back by a week and then they will scan you again and double check? Doubling hcg and any growth at that early stage should be given some more time. Maybe things will (sadly) start naturally but I have heard of pregnancies of an earlier stage where 2 weeks later there is a heartbeat etc.

Sending you love Op. horrible uncertainty for you at the minute. X

What an awful experience at an already stressful time!! If you can afford a private scan a week or so from now I would do that. They are usually around stg70 but do check reviews of the centre you choose and make certain the staff are properly qualified. If you do start to lose the pregnancy in the meantime then obviously not much you can do but if there is still a possibility then you should have the opportunity to find out either way.
