Hi all, my first post and first time trying to concieve so would love some guidance between Folic acid and Methylfolate - can both be taken at once? I have Endo and been advised Methylfolate can support fertility, but I am taking folic acid, so unsure whether to change, unless I can take both? Any help greatly appreciated, thank you

Are you taking a high dose Folic Acid? Or just 400mcg?

The methylfolate is a much better version for being absorbed.

If you’re taking 400mcg I think it would be ok to use the methylfolate instead. If it’s 5mg I guess it’s tricky to know if you’re getting enough (even though methyl is better absorbed).

Whatever your body doesn’t used will be peed out.

Thanks for replying! I am currently taking 400mg of folic acid. For endo, recommended is 800mg of methylfolate. If I was to take both, that would be 1200mg so unsure if this is too much? I'm happy to start the methylfolate instead, but wondering if this has the same benefits to folic acid, with helping support the spine of the baby? Otherwise I would be a little reluctant

Switch to methyl folate. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate found in food. A lot of people have a mutation which means you don’t convert the folic acid to methyl folate in the body. Taking methyl folate means you get around this step. People who have the mutation actually build up the folic acid and it blocks things more. Adding folic acid to bread for some people does more harm when methyl is better.

I was taking 800mg methyl folate before pregnancy and still now in pregnancy. There are actually quite a few people who can't metabolise folic acid so best use methyfolate.
