Waters broke at 34 weeks 6 days

So, my waters broke at 34 weeks 6 days, was admitted overnight, as all seemed okay, was sent home on antibiotics and asked to monitor for signs of infection/labour/slowed baby movements etc. Been home for a couple of days now but the stress is nerve wracking-sometimes it’s the leaking/gushing, sometimes it’s wondering if baby is moving enough (movements sometimes feel different-midwife said that can happen), sometimes it’s just worries about whether baby will be okay (they hope to wait till week 37 if possible so that baby is mature enough). Would truly appreciate some hand-holding and advice on how to manage the anxiety--positive stories and responses only please !

No experience sorry. Just wanted to offer you a virtual handhold Flowers

Handhold from me! Hope everything goes well and phone/go back whenever you need reassurance. Nothing is more important than your baby's and your safety!

Not the same, but mine were at 36w 4 days. I then went into stop start labour, included at 37 weeks when I stalled at 7cm.

Baby was fine and all was ok. If you’re not happy with movements, don’t feel bad about going in for monitoring, every time. It’s not worth the additional stress. You’re still at a decent gestation too (my girl was already going to be big and weighed 8lb 4oz !!!)

My waters broke at 32 weeks. I was allowed home the next day but my gosh I remember the anxiety. Plus having to wear pads to catch the gushes it was awful. I had daily checks (temp for me and monitor for baby). I went into labour naturally a week later and had baby very quickly. Baby was five pounds exactly so a good weight. We came home two weeks later x best of luck x

My best friend had similar, I think she was 33 weeks. They were sure baby was going to come early but as it happened she stayed put until 37 weeks when she was born (completely healthily) by elective section.

I do remember my friend going to hell and back with the worry, not to mention the discomfort of leaking continuously for ages. Sending a handhold and thinking of you x

I agree that if you’re worried about the baby’s movements, just keep going in for monitoring. Don’t worry about being a nuisance.

I had exactly this, same gestation. I was kept in overnight to have antibiotics and steroids. I then had antibiotics for 10 days at home and didn't go into labour.

I had an additional scan at 36 weeks to check on DD, and the amount of water left, and had a blood test at the same time to check for signs of infection.

I was induced at 37 weeks. I wasn't dilated at all but was given the internal gel. If you're induced with waters broken, they won't let the induction last a long time. They give the gel and then 6 hours later start the drip.
I didn't need the drip, the gel started contractions immediately and DD was born 11 hours later.

My waters started leaking at 35 + 2 weeks and then broke fully at 36 weeks. Had pre term labour at 33 weeks which they managed to stop with medication. Had steroids and baby was born at 36+1 needed help with a feeding tube and jaundice lights but all okay. He was small at 4lbs 12 and lost a lot of weight due to feeding issues but he's now a very happy 18 month old although a little behind and still small but healthy :)

The anxiety is the worst tho. Both of mine I had threatened pre term labour and then born at 36 weeks both are all good now 😁

I went at 34 +5 Admitted for steroids and (felt like) constant monitoring. Went home with antibiotics and every other day monitoring.

I was induced at 36+1 weeks and baby was born by c section at 36+2. Induction didn't work for me, and I didn't get past 2cm but overall whilst unpleasant wasn't horrific. The section was a breeze.

Baby was fine. Jaundiced, sleepy and skinny but she perked up after a month or so and started packing on the weight at 3 months. No detriment to being a little bit prem.

If you're worried you can ask to go for monitoring. And try to rest as much as possible.

No experience of waters breaking early but my DS was born at 33 weeks- spent 2 weeks in NICU but he was unwell to begin with and that’s why they did a c-section so early. Did you get steroids?

Hope all goes well for you! Defo push back with hospital if you think something is wrong- go with your mama gut x

My waters broke at 35 weeks. I was kept in a couple of nights for steroids and antibiotics. Went into labour at 35+4 and baby was fine. 5lb 10oz and no issues other than a bit of jaundice. Try to get as much rest as possible and trust your instincts.

Thank you everyone ! To update this thread for the benefit of another worried to-be-mum (or dad)-I did go back to hospital-turned out that baby’s heart rate had dropped and eventually was delivered within a few hours of the original post. It’s over 3 months since that day and baby and me are both doing well.

And for everyone who replied-thank you-your messages were my comfort and confidence in the waiting room that day.
