No yolk sac

I just had an early scan at 5 weeks (because of previous molar pregnancy). The gestational sac measured 5w2d which matches ovulation date, but no yolk sac was visible.

Has anyone had a scan at this point and not seen the yolk sac but gone on to have a successful pregnancy, or is this not a good sign? Thanks.

You are still so early. You booked in for another scan? X

kensue19 · 23/10/2023 15:02

Yes, I'm booked in again next Tuesday so I should be 6w3d.

I'm trying to take the fact that the gestational save was measuring right on track as a good sign, but it definitely felt like the sonographer thought it wasn't a good sign.

Hiya! I had a scan when I was exactly 6 weeks and just had the gestational sac. Went back at 6 weeks 4 days and had the yolk sac :)

That's really reassuring. Thanks.

How did everything go @kensue19 ? I'm currently waiting for my second scan after my first scan on Monday shown no yolk sac? x

@Babydance255 how far along are you? I had a scan yesterday at 5+2 (to rule out ectopic due to right sided pain) and the gestational sac was measuring ahead at 6+1 but nothing inside! The midwife said it was positive as things seem to be progressing as they should but I can’t help to feel anxious that it was empty!

Hi any update as I’m going through the same thing but next appointment private scan is after christmas now. I’m feeling too anxious

Macccc · 11/12/2023 18:31

@Crazylicious I’m not the OP but I had similar. Had a scan (internal) at 5+2 and it was just the gestational sac. Went back today at 7+1 and had another internal scan which showed the baby and heartbeat! So there is hope😊

Thanks so much for your msg. I am still so worried. My scan isn’t until after christmas now so it seems like a neverending wait. Will see if I can get something sooner somewhere else.
congratulations on the heartbeat!

@kensue19 hi just wondering if you had an update?

TheShellBeach · 11/12/2023 18:46

Really early scans are supposed to be for reassurance but they seem to cause nothing but worry.

It's better to wait till eight weeks if you must have a scan before the NHS one.

In four pregnancies, I had three scans in total. In two of the pregnancies, I had no scans at all.
They don't change the outcome.
