Thai Food cravings 😋

I'm 6.5 weeks pregnant and craving Pad Thai and Tom Sam (green papaya salad) soooo badly.

Apparently you shouldn't eat unripe papaya when pregnant, and I've also read warnings about Pad Thai - is lime wedge washed properly, bean sprout concern too. And lemongrass, which is in so many Thai dishes, I've read isn't good either? How can my cravings be satiated???

Did anyone eat safe Thai meals?

No advice but I would also like to know this as I love pad Thai but have been told that beansprouts should be avoided.

I know! I guess we could order it with no beansprouts and bring our own washed limes???😂 It's all I can think about at the moment.

I don't think the NHS mentions anything about beans sprouts? Stick to NHS guidelines rather than Google or you'll drive yourself mad....oh and enjoy your Pad Thai!!

LittleDoveLove · 20/10/2023 17:08

I read about the beansprouts too, I avoid them. I had a Thai the other day but I had a red curry X

I've eaten bean sprouts and pad Thai multiple times throughout this pregnancy. You will be fine, just follow NHS guidelines.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 20/10/2023 17:18

Make your own? Pad Thai is pretty simple to make and you don’t need to add bean sprouts, you can even buy kits for making it where you just add an egg and the protein in supermarkets now.

Som ram is pretty easy to make at home as well, or at least a good enough version of it. If you can’t eat unripe papaya I have made som tam with other veg as the base before as green papaya is so expensive to buy - I use chopped lettuce, carrot, cabbage etc in the papayas place.

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/10/2023 17:22

I’d definitely stay away from papaya in pregnancy. Its well known for causing contractions in pregnancy and a natural contraceptive.

Make your own pad thai.

SquashPenguin · 20/10/2023 17:23

Hahah this all sounds so exotic- I’m 9 weeks tomorrow and I lie awake thinking about quorn chicken nuggets 🤣

Whataretheodds · 20/10/2023 17:27

I ate som tam at 20 weeks. I'm now 25w, no ill effects.

I think the lemongrass issue is only lemongrass root - you're not going to have a problem with a Thai curry.

If there was a problem with one portion of green papaya then it would be more widely communicated

Hi! I’m from Thailand I have 2 grown up sons and I’m now 32 weeks pregnant with my 3rd. I have been making Som Tum and cooked my own Thai food throughout my pregnancy and baby are fine. As long as you eat them in the right amount and with bean sprouts make sure you rinse them well and make sure it cook 😀enjoy

Oh god this was me with my youngest! Weeks and weeks of craving Thai food

I just made sure it was well cooked. It didn’t cross my mind it wouldn’t be safe. Youngest is 8 and also loves Thai food!!

BeethovenNinth · 21/10/2023 08:44

I think I ate Thai food - home made - six days a week for months. It was bizarre. Lemongrass included.

sadly it put me off and I don’t much like it now.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2023 16:39

Beansprouts are ok as long as they are cooked. It's raw sprouted beans you should be careful with
