Finding out sex

We didn't find out with my daughter but I really can't decide what to do this time. I keep changing my mind! I'm having a planned section so I feel like there won't be any surprise left.

It does make sense to find out but I just don't know what to do.

Don't really know why I'm posting! Should I find out 🙈

Keep it as a surprise! I am a midwife and I absolutely love it when we have a surprise baby. It just adds a touch of extra magic

Ah thank you. I agree I do love it when people don't know and I absolutely loved not knowing last time! My sisters due next week and she doesn't know what's she's having and it's just extra exciting!

Don’t find out! I didn’t find out with my first and for some reason I wanted to with my second – also a planned section – and I’m so glad I held out for the surprise. I burst into tears seeing him; the whole theatre cheered – we were the only surprise of the day, and it was two days before Christmas so everyone was buzzing and festive. It is one of my most cherished memories and I can’t imagine it being the same finding out at a scan without then getting the newborn cuddle and getting to know your baby. Scans are a bit impersonal, you’re in a queue, zip your trousers back up and wipe off the goo, off you go. Theatre you’re being sewn up, you’re going nowhere, so you have time to absorb the shock and awe and news.

Keep the surprise. There are so few surprises now it's nice to just enjoy wondering for a bit longer.

Also if your daughter is potentially going to be disappointed about one or the other then she is less likely to have this reaction once baby is here.

Didn't find out with DC1, definitely didn't want to. We weren't sure either DC2, thought it might be good to be able to explain to DC1 but he was still so little it didn't really matter.

Couldn't decide so flipped a coin in the waiting room before scan. Coin said find out but as soon as that landed we both knew we actually didn't want to, so we didn't. Sometimes it takes a coin toss coming put "wrong" to make you realise how you really feel!

I didn’t find out with two of mine and it was so lovely for my partner to be able to tell me. This time we found out so I knew whether to keep my DDs stuff or not (although I’ve just gone on a massive clearing spree and got rid of most of it anyway 🤦‍♀️it’s actually been really nice though as we’ve picked a name and my youngest has been able to use the name on my bump so it’ll be easier for her to understand who the baby is when she comes.

sorry that wasn’t much help 😂

Ah thank you everyone. I'll keep it as a surprise. I so loved not knowing last time and it was really exciting finding out at the time! Just feels so long to wait. I wasn't tempted at all with my first!!

Definitely keep a surprise we are!

Glad you're keeping it a surprise. I've not found out with either of mine, and I genuinely think it's the best! My second was an emergency C-section, and the anaesthetist took a photo of me finding out the sex. It's one of my very favourite photos.

I also work in obstetric theatres, and I echo @UpUpUpU . It makes for a wonderful moment seeing you and whoever might be with you find out. Just adds an extra bit of magic to what is already an incredible moment.
