Spotting - how much might be normal…?

Hi everyone, I’m 5w0d today and have had a little bit of spotting on and off over the past week. Today was a bit heavier, but still only when I wipe. I can’t have a scan for another week, and keep being told it may be normal, or could be miscarriage. Can I ask what’s ‘normal’ or what other people have had? Thank you

Brown or red?

I spotted brown and pink on and off for the entire first trimester with this pregnancy. It was never a lot, just when I wiped and stayed at a constant level. I am 35 weeks now so all was well. I also bled pink once in my first pregnancy which ended in a healthy baby.

I have had two previous miscarriages, the first was around 5.5 weeks and the bleeding was brown and steadily increased for a few days till it then suddenly became heavy and red. It was very obvious what was happening. The second was a blighted ovum found at my 12 week scan, I had no bleeding at all.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that it is impossible to say, which is horrible I know. Fingers crossed for you and I hope the week till the scan passes quickly.

Thanks both. Usually not very much and watery pink, but this evening was red. Blimey this is stressful isn’t it! I’m so sorry to hear about your losses xx

Tbh as this has been going on for a few days now and is now pink, id prepare for it to be a chemical pregnancy.

I had a little bit at 5 weeks but was brown and just on wiping. It lasted a couple of hours at most (I kept running to the loo to check on it!). I’m sorry OP but red doesn’t sound good news, I would prepare for this to be a chemical.

I had pink spotting and occasionally brown 2/3 times a week in first trimester. From implantation.

Second trimester pink spotting and a few bright red big bleeds. It's still going (22 weeks!)

Have you had a hcg blood draw?

No haven’t had bloods - is that something offered by GPs?

I’m so sorry that you’re having this worry. It’s horrible and unfortunately spotting/bleeding is so common with different outcomes for everyone so there’s really no way to know until you have your scan. This pregnancy, I had bright red spotting just on wiping at 6 weeks but it lasted literally about 10 minutes and then stopped. The EPU just told me it was probably a graze on my cervix and I’m just waiting for my 12 week scan to confirm everything’s ok. My previous pregnancy I had brown spotting for around 3 days at 6 weeks and DC1 is now a wild one year old!

There really isn’t a way to know. I had red bleeding at 9 weeks, now 38 weeks so red isn’t necessarily bad news.
