When did you start buying baby bits?

Hi all, I am 16 weeks today and wasn’t planning on buying anything for baby until after 20 weeks other than an outfit we bought at the 12 week scan…but I have seen the snuzpod I wanted has 25% off at the moment and not sure whether to just buy it now?! Is 16 weeks too soon to be buying furniture 🤔 thanks in advance for any opinions!

It's a totally personal choice - lots of people are superstitious. I'm not, and I was around 16 weeks when the January sales were on....I ordered all the 'big ticket' items then, and had the most things assembled and ready by 25 weeks including the pram. (It was also covid so there wasn't much else to do!)

SparkyBlue · 09/10/2023 12:38

Totally personal choice. I'm very superstitious so I had barely anything for DC1 but I was much more organised for DC3. It all depends on your own personality

TTCno1in23 · 09/10/2023 13:06

My mum is really superstitious so I think that’s why I’m being cautious! But with the amount of stuff we need to buy I feel like we need to start now so it’s not a huge lump sum coming out of one payday!

I felt I was jinxing something (?) to buy stuff early but one of my very logical upfront friends said if the absolute worst was to happen, would you try again? And the answer was yes so the stuff ultimately will be used. I know it’s a dark way of looking at it but helped me decide to take the plunge !
Next time round I’ll be buying bits and bobs as I go along to save the mad rush at the end and eating away at maternity funds 😂

Takemetothelakes45 · 09/10/2023 13:12

To add u have a very happy healthy 8 month old even though her pram was in our house and built when I was about 7/8 months along 😅

StillWantingADog · 09/10/2023 13:15

Other than a cot, car seat, pram and a small supply of sleep suits and nappies I think most stuff was ordered by amazon in the days after he was born.
I didn’t get almost anything until I’d finished work for Mat leave about 3 weeks before he came. I think that’s quite late tho!

soxthecat22 · 09/10/2023 13:19

I didn't buy anything until 30 weeks. I bought the pram, cot and car seat and a few baby suits then and then everything else was bought once babies were here. Wouldn't want to jinx it and also wouldn't want loads of baby stuff round my house for weeks beforehand!

arethereanyleftatall · 09/10/2023 13:20

I bought it all (bar a car seat, one pack of baby grows, and one pack of nappies) after she was born.

RiderofRohan · 09/10/2023 13:24

I'll be 21 weeks during Black Friday and will start looking for deals then, though I know a lot of sales are a bit of a hoax.

Olika · 09/10/2023 13:29

I left everything to 3rd trimester just to be on the safe side but if it's on sale now perhaps you should get it. You can always sell it.

gerteddy · 09/10/2023 13:36

I didn't buy anything at all until after the 20wk scan. Mainly because I didn't want neutral colours. So started buying clothes after that.

The big items I ordered most things around 25-32wks. Mainly because we hadn't yet decorated the room and storing everything until baby arrived is annoying. Think the pram/car seat was the last thing ordered.

There will lots of gd deals on around Black Friday but maybe the one u have seen is better.

TTCno1in23 · 09/10/2023 13:42

Thank you everyone for your input! My partner has said just to go for it…and like someone said, if the worst was to happen we would try again so hopefully they will all get used 🤞🏽

We bought all the big ticket items at 10 weeks because it was January sales AND mothercare closing down sale. Winner!

im not a superstitious type though 🙂

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 09/10/2023 19:27

36 weeks plus but I never did buy any of the ‘big ticket’ items, because I didn’t have a car and had no space for a cot, so it was just babygros and nappies, really. got a baby gym thing for my second.

Kirstylvsya · 09/10/2023 20:00

@TTCno1in23 lots of snuzpods on Facebook market place so cheap and mainly brand new.

Charlielechat · 09/10/2023 20:15

I'm 28 weeks and started buying the big items after 20 weeks. I also got the Snuzpod4 on the 25% offer too, it was too good to miss 🙂 I actually got another 15% off it on Amazon with the 'baby wishlist'. You need to have had your list for 14 days before being eligible for the discount though.

Retrogamer · 09/10/2023 20:21

I bought a steriliser because the offer was less than a 1/4 of the price on clearance. I've been so tempted to buy a sleepsuit but I'm too anxious to commit to that just yet. I'm considering after the 20 week scan to get some clothing and a moses basket. A friend of mine bought all her stuff at 6 weeks. So it's all down to when you feel like it .

Weefreetiffany · 09/10/2023 20:31

If you’re 16 weeks now won’t you be around 30 during the Christmas sales? No need to get ahead of yourself now if you’re feeling superstitious. I’m 24 weeks and planning on Black Friday and Christmas sale shopping, I hope that 25% comes back on the sunzepods though as that looks like a bargain!

roastytoastysnowballs · 09/10/2023 20:40

I had my bits and pieces mentally chosen and added to a list

But I didn't buy one thing until I was 30 weeks

PickledScrump · 09/10/2023 21:05

What’s the reasoning behind not getting anything before 20 weeks? Never heard of that. Baby stuff is expensive, makes sense to get it on offers over time. I know some people wait until the 12 week scan but never known anyone wait more than that. Buying a baby item isn’t going to cause anything to happen

Black Friday is my plan too! Won't be quite 20 weeks by then but I love a Bargain!

ActDottie · 09/10/2023 22:49

Up to you, im 26 weeks and we’re planning on getting stuff in November.

If you have the space for it and it’s a good price then go for it.

hopefulmum46 · 10/10/2023 07:26

I'm only 14 weeks and have already bought a couple of outfits. I'm struggling with hyperemesis so it helps to actually feel that it's all going to be worthwhile. I'm planning to keep an eye on products that I like and buy if there are good discounts or suitable second hand things that come up at some point over the next 6 months (e.g. black Friday, boxing day/January sales). I don't want to clutter up the house too early but equally don't want to miss out on bargains!

helloooitsmeee · 10/10/2023 10:31

With my first, I'd bought her travel system before I'd even had my 12 week scan! I was buying stuff pretty much as soon as I found out I was pregnant tbh! This pregnancy, I'm 20 weeks today and so far have only purchased a baby grow to announce the pregnancy. We find out what we're having soon, so after that we'll start getting clothes, and a travel system.

Definitely not going to go overboard with buying stuff this time, and still have the furniture from when my LG was a baby :)

thecatsthecats · 10/10/2023 11:05

Superstitions don't affect the outcome, which 99% of the time is a healthy baby.

As you go along, you definitely do get more tired and less mobile though. I'm very glad I got a fair amount done early and can just chill now.

The only thing I'd advise is be wise to the order in which you'll need things, especially the seasonal nature of clothes etc. Apart from somewhere to sleep, clothes, something to carry them in and nappies, they need very little in the first few weeks.
