Brown spotting - Need advice

Hi all 👋🏻 Almost 2 weeks ago, I experienced some spotting for the first time. Not much red, mostly brown discharge. I let EPU know & the had a look with a speculum & took a swab - nothing abnormal came back. They booked me for a reassurance scan - all fine & no visible reason for the spotting. Should I push for a blood test to check progesterone / HCG levels. Discharge ranges each day from light, dark brown, to stretchy or creamy consistency. It’s just continuous! Should I be worried? I’m just over 9 weeks ♥️ Thank you!

Hey,
The bloods likely won’t show anything in particular, especially if it’s an ongoing pregnancy.
Did they confirm a live pregnancy? If so, then the discharge should hopefully reduce. If anything changes through, like colour or you get pain, I would get in touch with them again.
They normally only monitor bloods if there’s no sign of a pregnancy in the womb or outside the womb.
If you’re concerned about the discharge, it doesn’t do any harm to give them a quick call. The nurses are very good & will give you some more info. In my personal experience, I probably wouldn’t worry unless it changed colour to red or got heavier. But please be guided by your own feelings! It’s so difficult giving advice on something so personal.

Hey lovely, thank you for your reply. Yes, they confirmed a live pregnancy & everything seems fine. I keep reading about spotting for a few days, but it’s 2 weeks now, so am just wondering what’s causing it & why it’s so continuous. x

Should hopefully settle by late first trimester. Mention it at your 12 week scan, but most of it stops eventually. Not sure why some bleed for a few days, but others experience it for weeks.

Hey I had very similar around the exact same time, mine started as a bright red bleed though and changed to brown for 2ish weeks. On a review scan I was prescribed Cyclogest to support the pregnancy as the doctor said they will do no harm. Bleeding stopped almost immediately and I’m just 20 weeks now. They didn’t check my bloods but I had a miscarriage previous cycle which I think meets criteria to be offered it alongside vaginal bleed. I researched a lot at the time and the hormonal changes can cause breakthrough bleed and it is very common from what I saw xx hope all goes well

Myrah20 - Thank you for responding to me. I will mention it at my 12 week scan x

I had brown discharge on and off until the day of my 12 week scan. I went at 6 or 7 weeks to EPU and they couldn't find a reason but baby was okay. A couple of weeks later I had had some more so went back and they found like an area of blood in my womb or something. I'm so sorry I've forgotten the name of it) but it was totally normal and eventually it all came out. They said they didn't need to see me again unless new symptoms and at my 12 week scan it had gone and baby was fine. Shes 6 months now ❤️

If you're worried I'd go back to GP for another referral xx

Thank you so much mrshenny. I’m keeping an eye on it. If it gets worse or jus doesn’t let up, I’ll contact EPU again. My 12 week scan is in 2 weeks. ❤
