Aciclovir 36 weeks onwards

Hi ladies

just wanted some advice please … I suffer with HSV1 breakouts (coldsores) in the downstairs region!! When I mentioned this to my midwife at the booking appointment she advised that I’d need to start aciclovir tablets from 36 weeks onwards so that I could ensure I have a vaginal birth; and had to see a consultant to discuss. She mentioned that if I had a breakdown when I went into Labour then a c-section would have to be done.
had an appointment booked with consultant next Friday but in the meantime came down with covid… had a scare at MAU yesterday with mentions of early inductions etc,
usually I always suffer with a breakout when I’ve been ill so thought I’d call the antenatal clinic to see if I can bring the appointment forward given the fact they’ve mentioned the possibility of baby coming early and I’ll be past 37 weeks by the time the consultant apt takes place.
anyway, the antenatal clinic said the appointment with consultant was cancelled they forgot to tell me, and if I wanted to go down today to collect a prescription for aciclovir one month course 3 x 400mg daily.
i went down and got the prescription but they were so busy there were no midwives to talk to… the receptionists told me to call triage if I’m worried but tbh seems a waste of time calling a line that’s for emergencies to ask a question about tablets… My community midwife offices are not shut and Dr’s won’t help as nothing in their system so just a bit in limbo… just wanted some advice from other ladies that have been in this position and whether you’ve taken a months course of aciclovir and baby has been okay and no issues with the pregnancy due to the tablets? X

I suffer from this. I took the course at the end of the pregnancy but still opted for a c section because my outbreak are really regular and I didn't want to take the risk.

I’m in a similar position and just wanted to see if you took the suppressive treatment at the end of your pregnancy and if there were any side effects?

@MOMG I took a course from 36 onwards, exact same dosage and for the same reasons although mine is HSV2. Was all set for a vaginal birth and was in the process for a few hours but due to other reasons ended up having a c section. One thing I'll warn you about is that I had a surprise visit from a pediatric Dr when I was on the ward after my daughter was born who came and looked over the baby, asked if I had had any recent outbreaks etc, I wasn't expecting it and would have preferred a heads up from my midwife that this would happen.
Baby was totally fine, she's now 2.5 almost 3 and is super advanced, very chatty, quick learner, so has not caused any issues. I also took a few tablets earlier in the pregnancy to treat an outbreak I had.
