Experiences with cervical ectropion / erosion?

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and I’ve been spotting / had weird discharge on & off since 6 weeks. Been to the EPU and had 3x scans, all fine no reason for bleeding shown last one at 8 weeks 3 days and measuring pretty much bang on for dates with a normal heartbeat. Since last Sunday I’ve had spotting pretty much every day. Always a bit of red blood mixed in with discharge, not like a proper bleed such as a period / nose bleed etc.
EPU have told me I’ve got a cervical ectropion which I did know I have but they’ve also said it’s not atypical for it to bleed every day which is what is happening to me, although I didn’t have any bleeding yesterday. I also haven’t done anything really that could cause it? Like haven’t had sex, not really overdone it… so I can’t even think of a reason why it can be bleeding. Saw a gynae consultant and she said the bleeding didn’t really look like ectropion bleeding it looked more like ‘a show’ and was a threatened miscarriage, but EPU are saying it does look like ectropion bleeding and a ‘threatened miscarriage’ is just a way of saying unexplained bleeding in pregnancy. So confused. Anyone have any experiences they can share and possibly reassure me? Finding it hard waiting for my 12 week scan which I don’t even have the date of yet. It’s probably still 2+ weeks away.

I had a cervical ectropian in my 1st pregnancy but it didn't cause any bleeding, only knew cause the GP told me when she did my smear just before I got pregnant. My next smear was 3 years later after another pregnancy and no one mentioned anything so I'm assuming it's gone.

Mine was likely caused by being on the pill.

I think mine was also caused by the pill @TheSnailAndTheWaaaail I’ve had issues for years on & off and I also bled in my first pregnancy with my little girl who was born perfect at 38 weeks but it’s the fact I’m getting it pretty much every day for not really any reason which is concerning me.

If it's causing issues I think you can get a procedure done to remove the ectropian? Probably not when pregnant though!

Hi haven't got any advice but looking for it too. I started bleeding yesterday and got seen and was told I had this too. Iv bled again 3 times agsin since yesterday morning. Bleeding again now and I'm convinced it looks a bit clot like. I'm freaking out after having 2 miscarriages already xx

@TheSnailAndTheWaaaail Yes can definitely get a procedure done I was offered it in March when I had my colposcopy and was rediagnosed with the ectropion but as we were planning baby no2 I decided against it at the time. The consultant I saw Thursday said they wouldn’t treat while pregnant so something to think about after birth. Months away yet 😂

@My2boysaremyworld So sorry you’re going through this it is truly awful and sorry for your losses 🩷 How many weeks are you? What is the bleeding like is it a lot? I have had clots in mine but they were tiny and smeared on the toilet paper if I squished them (sorry I know that’s gross😂)
In my case I definitely think it is what they say and it’s the ectropion bleeding as I went for a private scan yesterday as I was so worried with it keeping happening and baby was absolutely fine measuring an extra day ahead of what was expected. Hoping you get the same outcome. It’s terrifying xx

@katie416 I'm 6 weeks. I haven't stopped getting blood since about 3pm now. It's not loads but enough to freak me out. I thought I had some tiny clots earlier which freaked me out more. I rang up EPU and they told me yes it's normal to bleed. In my head though I'm losing my baby cuz my two previous miscarriages started off which bleeding on and off for a few days befire it went wrong. Do you get some cramps etc with yours? Iv got a scan tomorrow morning and dreading it. So happy your baby is ok xx

@My2boysaremyworld Is it only when you wipe or is it filling a pad? I mostly get the red blood on a morning and then it trails off into a pinky browny coloured discharge throughout the day but I had blood every time I wiped last Sunday all day. I haven’t had bad cramps but I’ve had like a sort of dull ache period type pain which has been on & off since about 4ish weeks. You could also have a sub chorionic hematoma I think they’re called. I don’t have any experience of them but read lots of things about bleeding in early pregnancy and a lot of the time it can be this and can cause quite bad bleeds, also not harmful to the baby I believe. @katie416 yes it seems to be only when I wipe apart from yesterday about 2 hours after being examined I felt something come out and it was on my pad. Apart from that it's just when I wipe. So you've had something all day before? What is being done for you now? Yes I will let you know if it's good news x

@My2boysaremyworld That sounds normal to me that it came out onto your pad after the examination. If they’ve knocked the ectropion they’ll have made it bleed even more and that’s what will have come out. I remember when I was pregnant with my first, I had 2x examinations on separate instances of bleeding and after it was like a full period all at once like someone had turned on a tap and I lost a huge clot like the size of a 50p but it was just the ectropion.
They’re not doing anything for me at the moment, just waiting for my 12 week scan as long as I don’t get any heavier bleeding or any bad pain, at that point I’ve got to go back to EPU. At my booking appointment my midwife did put me down for consultant led care though, just so I can see one to discuss it with them and see what they want to do. I don’t believe they can treat the ectropion in pregnancy but not sure if they’ll want to keep a closer eye or something, they may even just discharge me back to the midwives.
You’re not for any reason taking aspirin are you? I took it in my last pregnancy as I was at risk of getting preeclampsia and it definitely made the bleeding worse xx

@katie416 no not taking aspirin. I'm still bleeding when I wipe. Was hoping it would of stopped by now before bed 😩 so are you still bleeding everyday? Is yours just when you wipe? Do you feel like you've got blood coming out all the time even when you haven't? My anxiety about going to the toilet is through the roof! Xx

Yeah I had blood when I wiped again this morning, but nothing throughout the rest of the day just light coloured discharge, but I’m honestly trying not to look too hard now if that makes sense because of the anxiety it causes so I totally understand where you’re coming from there. Is your bleeding like a really red bleed like say a nosebleed? Or is it like mucousy? Xx

@katie416 it's hard to say it's just blood that can be light red. Woke in the night and had nothing. Iv woke this morning with pressure like you get when you have a period and Iv got blood again! So stressed out x

@katie416 It’s not good. She couldn’t see anything. It’s either too early, miscarriage or ectopic. Iv had bloods taken and will find out results later xx

I have this. In my last two pregnancies I’ve had spotting and blood streaked discharge before 10 weeks. After that it’s stopped. With both I had early scans at the EPU but all was fine.

@Libmama Yeah that’s exactly what I’ve been having. Was it just one time or did you have it frequently? I’m 10 weeks now and still getting it but fingers crossed I haven’t had any today as of yet. I know it’s the ectropion deep down but it just worried me because of how frequent it’s been happening, it wasn’t like this in my first pregnancy.

Yes quite frequently. We ended up with two private scans at 6&8 weeks as well as I was anxious because of the bleeding. Plus an epu scan at 10.5 weeks. After that I didn’t have any more bleeding but I know the panic every time you go to the loo. It’s not nice. Fingers crossed for you!

@katie416 So nurse has rang and I’m even more up in the air and confused. My HCG levels are 117 which means it’s not a non viable pregnancy yet. Iv got to go back next Monday for more bloods to see if they have risen or dropped. Obviously if my bleeding gets worse with clots then I need to go up and I know that will confirm Iv lost the baby. There’s a chance I’m not as far gone but I really think I’m losing it x

@katie416 Can i ask how this turned out/is going for you? I've had the exact same thing! Dull aching in stomach since 4 weeks, pink spotting that starts randomly but only really on wiping/sort of digging for it (sorry tmi!) and sort of only once a day but has been for a week now. I had a scan yesterday at 5+3 and all looks fine Dr examined me with speculum and said i have cervical ectropion, i miscarried twins in October so the sight of any blood i find so upsetting and anxiety inducing! Reading this thread all of your symptoms are so similar to mine so just wondered how it's going/turned out! Hope all is well! xx

Absolutely fine 😊 I’m 20 weeks tomorrow and although I haven’t had my 20 week scan yet, everything is well so far and baby is a real wriggle bum and totally oblivious to any bleeding 😂
I was spotting from about 6-10 weeks and then had a few weeks rest bite and spotting again at 15 weeks. Had another scan at EPU and everything was fine, they examined my cervix again and ended up sending me for a colposcopy to have a look properly to see what was going on and when I had that the doctor was really confident that nothing else was going on and it’s just the ectropion, no abnormal cells or anything like that. Fingers crossed I’ve not had any more bleeds since but they’ve told me to try not to worry too much if I do and it’s ‘normal’ for me as it’s probably just the ectropion, but to go get checked out just for peace of mind.
