BV in pregnancy 23 weeks

Hi ladies,

I am 23 weeks pregnant and I have been prescribed metronidazole 400mg for 5 days due to having bacterial vaginosis picked up at a swab test.

I am really worried about a couple of things, one being taking the antibiotics whilst being pregnant and worrying if they are safe for me and the baby? But more importantly how much at risk am I at this stage of anything going wrong with the pregnancy as I have this infection?

No idea how long I've had it for as the swab was actually supposed to be for something else.

Please can somebody give me some advice or some comfort as I'm really worried? I'm so worried about the risks to my pregnancy of me having it.

Thanks!

Hi @lmp69,

I also found out I had BV by chance and was on metronidazole. You can use this website to search for medicines for safe use in pregnancy: https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/. I would assume that your GP knows you're pregnant and therefore would only prescribe safe antibiotics.

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

I think I'm more concerned about actually having BV and the chances of it leading to preterm labour or any other complications to the pregnancy

Do you have any advice about this or were you given any guidance?

Thanks

No, I didn't get given much advice but the NHS website has a small section on BV in pregnant women and basically says for the majority it will cause no issues but if left untreated can cause premature birth or miscarriage. I asked my midwife and she was unconcerned by it and said as long as I'd taken all the antibiotics it should clear the infection. I'm now 29 weeks and have zero issues so far x
