Hi everyone iv been drinking semi skimmed long life milk from Aldi I’m 20 weeks pregnant and I’m unsure weather it’s pasteurised I just thought most milks were pasteurised but now looking at the packet it doesn’t say pasteurised and I’m panicking now I had a bowel of cereal with it this morning I have threw them away now and won’t be drinking it again but I’m worrying any advice or reassurance would be appreciated x

The NHS guidance is that UHT milk is fine in pregnancy. UHT is heat treated like pasteurised milk it's just a different process. https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-types/milk-and-dairy-nutrition/. Any standard milk in the supermarket will be fine, it just means don't buy unpasteurised milk from a farm shop.

That said, I think UHT is lower in some vitamins and minerals (iodine for example) so you're probably better having fresh pasteurised milk if you can.

Dairy and alternatives in your diet

Read more about milk and dairy foods such as cheese and yoghurt, which are good sources of protein and calcium. But they can be high in saturated fat, so it's important to make healthy choices.

It’s UHT so yes is fine.

Yes it’s absolutely fine. You’re only likely to encounter unpasteurised milk directly from farms, stuff in supermarkets is pasteurised. Please try not to worry about every little thing or it makes pregnancy very stressful

It wouldn't be long life milk if it wasn't pasteurised. UHT = ultra heat treated to make it last longer. Think of it as super pasteurised!

FictionalCharacter · 20/09/2023 13:23

UHT is a much stronger heat treatment than pasteurisation, which is why UHT milk doesn’t need refrigeration before it’s opened. It’s virtually sterile.

Please try not to panic too much. If foods like this weren’t safe in pregnancy you would have been told so. Anxiety won’t do you any good.
