Morning, has anybody spread their NHS maternity pay over 9 months and if so how the heck do you work out what you will come out with each month?

I had no idea you could do this until my manager suggested it to me yesterday, if I did this I could have longer off

Any help would be much appreciated 😊

@AndrewGarfieldsLaptop Oooo I want to look into freezing my pension during mat leave.. How did you go about this? I'm NHS too.

Hi, when you say you took home £1600… do you mean that’s how much you were taking home during maternity leave?

Hi, yes!

Courtneyjh · 03/02/2024 13:04

had you made pension contributions or was this without having paid pension?

Froze my pension and my car parking fees. Reduced my RCN membership to 84p a month.

Ahh okay! And you know if (probably in the unlikely event) that the combined OMB & SMP pay exceeded normal full pay- what do they do then?

Not sure. It's happened to me twice; once was in July when we got the payrise/backpay and weirdly this month I got paid £2220 when I wasn't expecting a thing. I'm back at work tonight so I'll try and check,

There is no point doing this. Take all money as soon as it's available and place it in a high interest, easy access savings account. You'll earn a few extra pounds each month on your money rather than the employer.

Spread it out yourself.

I did that with some of my money; skimmed a few £100s off a few months, popped it in an account for the end of maternity leave.

Earned a staggering £10.72! Whoooooo

Yes it's all going to depend on how much you have in the account, for how long and what your interest rate is.

Interest rates are currently high so your money can work more for you. Just make sure you're choosing an account that's 4-5 percent at least.

And £10 will still buy you nappies for a few weeks. Better than nothing.

What happens if your combined omp & smp maternity pay exceeds normal pay? What do they do?

gettingolderbutcooler · 05/02/2024 13:51

Yes I did. Called payroll and they told me the amount.
