Brown discharge at 14 weeks pregnant

I have had 4 previous miscarriages. 2 did not progress past 5 weeks and the two at 9 weeks and 13 weeks were due to subchorionic haematoma. This pregnancy has gone very smoothly and I had a private scan on Friday and everything looked perfect. This morning I have started with some brown discharge which is only evident on wiping. I phoned the midwives and they said its common especially as myself and DH dtd last night. Does anyone have any experience of this? Looking for some reassurance. 😔

Sorry for your losses OP and I can understand how this may be extremely worrying for you.

I had small amounts of spotting at around 14-16 weeks in both my pregnancies. The reasons in my midwife did say that it happens quite commonly at this stage of pregnancy and it generally turns out to be nothing to be concerned over. One possible explanation given to me was that it's a shift of hormones as it's around the time that your placenta takes over. My pregnancy with my son continued as normal and he was born at full term. I'm currently pregnancy with DD (18 weeks) and it's been 3 weeks since I last spotted and everything seems to be progressing as normal currently.

That said, it's always important to raise any bleeding with your midwife. They may likely encourage you to go through your trust's process to be seen and referred to your EPU for a scan / further investigation to ensure all is okay with you and baby.

I hope everything is okay for you moving forwards x

I had it in both of my successful pregnancies. I do think it’s normal, it’s red blood they’re more worried about.

Hi @JFBMac - it might be old blood disturbed by your scan. I had this at 13 weeks and it lasted a few days.

Thank you all. I really appreciate your replies. I'm going up to the midwives now. How long did you have the spotting for?

Hi OP,

Sorry to hear about your previous losses.

I had some brown blood/discharge at 16 weeks and it terrified me. Turned out everything was absolutely fine and DS will turn 2 in a couple of months Smile Just wanted to share a positive story for you.

Best wishes for your pregnancy Flowers
