Fetal pole and heartbeat

Hi everyone,

I just wondered if anyone can share their experience of how soon after a fetal pole is detected, a heart beat should follow. I had an early scan due to bleeding at approx 5+3, with yolk sac, gestational sac and fetal pole present but no heartbeat. The sonographer mentioned this was possibly due to it being too early/the fetal pole being too small. I have another scan booked in about 10 days time. They also discovered a ‘blood pool’ and a corpus luteum cyst which they believed had some blood coming from it - not sure if anyone has any experience of this.

Thank you! 😊

A heartbeat isn’t usually detected until at least 6 weeks.

Hi Laura,
We had a follow up scan approx 10 days later and there was a detectable heartbeat. The bleeding eventually stopped just before the 12 week scan. Little one is now 5 and a half weeks old! Hope everything is ok with you ❤️

Ah that’s amazing news! Congratulations 🥳 I’m in the same boat- went for scan at 6+4 and the fetal pole is there, 2-3mm but no heartbeat and I’m terrified the heartbeat won’t develop. I’m going for a follow up scan but the wait is killing me (and I only went yesterday!). Thank you for sharing your wonderful news x

Thank you! 🥰

The waiting game is so hard - I know exactly how you feel. Try to keep your mind busy, it really helped me to try to just think about what I could control. In your case (similar to me), there’s nothing more you can do right now until your follow up scan so (easier said than done I know), try to not overthink it too much if you can. Sending you lots of positive vibes for your next scan ❤️ xx
