Any luck preventing stretch marks?

I see all sorts of miracle creams and oils advertised, but the nhs and most official dermatology websites say nothing can really stop stretch marks and the oils etc don’t actually work.

I keep seeing secret saviours preventionwear on my insta (a combo of a cream and a tight band you wear that has a texture like ostrich skin)

anyone tried any of this stuff? Did it work/not work?

I got terrible stretch marks as a teen on my thighs, boobs and bum, so was paranoid in pregnancy. I'm another one that slathered on the Clarins oil and I didn't get any in both pregnancies. Worth a try!

I used Palmers and got no stretch marks from pregnancy. Like others though, I do have some on my boobs and bum from teen years.

I just used the moisturisers that I already had, nothing special. I didn't get any stretch marks, but dd was born 37+4 and I see some posters didn't get stretch marks until 38 weeks so maybe that factors in.

My mum didn't get any for her pregnancies so part if it may be genetic.

I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter, no stretch marks in my pregnancies. My mother & sisters both had stretch marks from their pregnancies though, so not genetic in my case at least

Any creams, lotions and oils only go into the upper levels of the skin, stretch marks happen in the deeper layers. It really is down to genetics unfortunately. Moisturising creams can help stop itching and tightness and massage can help the stretch marks fade quicker once they have appeared.

I used Secret Saviours, no idea if was the band or just me as obviously I couldn't use it on only one half of my bump! But I don't have any marks on my stomach. I did get them on the front of my thighs though, so maybe the band was useful. I enjoyed wearing it, I felt it have me a bit extra support when the bump got heavy, and the night cream smells nice.

I think it’s just genetic. I’ve never really had stretch marks, I’ve got 1 or 2 very very fault colourless ones on my inner thighs from teenage years and didn’t get any during my first pregnancy. I never used any creams or potions.
I’m nearly 30 weeks into my second pregnancy, so far none but it will be interesting to see if this pregnancy is different.

The only thing you can really do imo is keep weight gain to a minimum, drinking water and use a basic oil to moisturise.

It's hormonal too hence why it also
happens in pregnancy & if you are an older mum you are a lot less likely to get them.

ILookAtTheFloor · 03/09/2023 13:05

Definitely genetic. My mum, sister and I have never got any stretch marks. I've just had my third and again, none. We do have a really dark Linea Nigra that takes ages to fade though!

I used secret saviour band and lots of oils/creams in my first pregnancy and didn’t get stretch marks. Currently 6 months pregnant with DC2 and I’ve been doing the same. So far, so good but this bump feels much bigger!

TropicalTrama · 03/09/2023 13:11

I used bio oil in both pregnancies and didn’t get any but I think it’s mostly genetic (mum didn’t get any either) and also not going past 39 weeks as I know a few friends who found they suddenly appeared on/around their due dates.

Hi - another one adding that it’s luck/genetics, but what I did do was use retinol on the stretch marks after I had given birth/finished breastfeeding, and they entirely disappeared. I used skin and me, but I’m sure any prescription strength one would be enough. Good luck!

All 3 of my sisters got awful stretch marks in pregnancy. One of them looked like she’d been burned.

I got none, despite having the biggest babies. I am the only one of us that is hyper-mobile. I wonder if that means the skin is more stretchy 🤔

C1N1C · 03/09/2023 15:32

I heard from a top MD it's genetics.. If your mum had them, you'll more than likely have them.

If your mum doesn't any children, chances are you won't have to worry :)

raspberrycordial · 03/09/2023 18:12

I got stretch marks in my teens-thighs and boobs but none in first pregnancy (used bio oil but not religiously). Used secret saviours for second pregnancy as I was worried and didn't get any, I was bigger for the second. It was a bit annoying to use but I would have done it again if i was going to have more children

TheGirlFromTomorrow · 03/09/2023 18:15

It's genetic. My stomach felt like it would burst but I haven't got a single one. You would never know I'd been pregnant now. Same for my sisters, my mum, my aunts, and my grandmother.

Tailfeather · 03/09/2023 18:29

I didn't use anything and didn't get any. But did get some during puberty.
