Skin stain after iron infusion

I had to get an iron fusion drip yesterday after my iron levels failed to rise while taking the tablets. The first cannula they put in was really sore as soon as the infusion started and I told the midwife who said some pain could be normal. My arm then started to swell up and it was only then that it was stopped ten minutes later- meaning the cannula was not in the correct place. My forearm became very hard and discoloured but looked like a bruise. A few hours later it became brown and was obvious that it was a discolouration. I knew that this was a risk, albeit uncommon, and from reading online it seems like it is permanent.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had this and has had any luck in it reducing in colour? I'm so upset and the impact on my skin

Hi, I see this is an old post but was wondering if the staining disappeared? I had an injection in leg yesterday and have a huge stain. So upset and looking for hope.

Just seen this as doing some online research about this. Have you asked for a plastic referral? Also were you told and given the risk of the infusion? It is a risk but it depends if the correct person processes were followed if the cannula failed to work. There is lots or work around trying to avoid these staining risks. Lots of people do end up getting legal help for lazer especially if they weren't told of the risks

Hi

Apologies for the late reply- I've had issues getting logged back onto this.

Unfortunately nearly 6 months later it hasn't disappeared or faded at all. I've logged a complaint with the NHS but due to me signing the consent form and being informed of the risks they aren't taking any responsibility- despite their staff not listening to me when I said as soon as it started that I was in extreme pain with my arm swelling. I've logged another complaint and will be taking it further if required.

I asked for a dermatology referral (which has just come through this week) but they've just said I have to wait 12-18 months to see if it reduces and if not can look into laser treatment but after this but apparently the laser treatment I would need isn't available in Scotland. Again, I need to pursue a complaint about this but have no energy or time to do this whilst looking after a 5 month old baby.

I'm so sorry you've went through this- its absolutely awful!

Just wondering if the stain has faded even slightly? I had iron infusions after giving birth 2 months ago and the stain seems to be getting darker 😩
