6 week scan, not good news...

So after cramping and spotting over last couple of weeks, I had a scan today at 6+1. I have what is called a chorionic bump, which is quite rare. It's an abnormal growth in womb which is a soft marker for miscarriage. The saddest part was they saw embryo measuring a few days behind with a heartbeat, I would have rather it just been an embryo without heartbeat etc, I feel sad knowing it's alive but inevitably going to pass 🥲

I couldn't read and run.... So sorry you're going through this. I've never heard of this before is there nothing to be done? Is it set in stone that you'll miscarry?

I have my 6 weeks scan next week with epu and frightened to death 😣

Sunflowershade · 31/08/2023 16:19

I’m so sorry, this is so sad 😞 is there any chance? Xx

ThomasinaLivesHere · 31/08/2023 16:23

Such sad news! Sorry to hear that.

Justhereforaibu1 · 31/08/2023 16:31

Haven't heard of that and I'm sorry you are going through it

Kellyaust · 31/08/2023 16:42

Because id never heard of this I decided to research a bit, I found many many cases where the pregnancy progressed as normal so please please don't give up yet and hold onto hope. This is one example I found. Theres still a very good chance baby will be ok, yes prepare yourself but don't give up xxx

And another case. I did find a study where out of 52 pregnancies with a CB 47 of them went on to have successfull pregnancies. I hope this helps xxx

Thanks all for your replies @Kellyaust thanks doll for taking time to research. The sonographer said on report soft markers for miscarriage and said she's seen about 4 women have this over last 2 years, and only 1 pregnancy continued. She said in her opinion it's likely I'll miscarry x

@maria2bela1 you're welcome and I hope yours is another pregnancy that makes it 🤞❤️

Janeykat · 05/09/2023 19:35

@maria2bela1 how are you doing? I hope you are ok and sorry you are going through this.

I think I have a chorionic bump too... I went for a scan today at 7+1, baby was measuring a few days behind but with a heartbeat. The sonographer didnt know what the bump was and just asked me to come back in 2 weeks but after googling it looks exactly like one of those chorionic bumps and quite large:(

Hope your pregnancy is going ok, as per the research above it doesnt sound like it definately means miscarriage xx

maria2bela1 · 06/09/2023 21:32

Hi @Janeykat we are almost identical in situations and dates! I'm 7 weeks today, had a scan too. Also same as you, was measuring a few days behind but heartbeat present. I had some red spotting yesterday which is why I had the scan. It's horrible this thing as you don't know if you can get excited about the pregnancy or not!

Janeykat · 07/09/2023 08:29

Hi @maria2bela1 , that sounds scary about the bleeding but really great that they were able to see a heartbeat :) I read somewhere that you can bleed when the bump begins to be absorbed so it could be that?

I know what you mean, It is a really strange feeling as Im pregnant but cant really get excited yet... just a waiting game at the moment. I have my next scan on the 19th so really hoping it will be smaller/gone by then🤞

I really hope everything goes well for you, will be sending you lots of positive thoughts :)

maria2bela1 · 08/09/2023 06:13

@Janeykat Oh really? I didn't know about the reabsorbing thing. That's the thing too, no proper medical advice online, just case studies etc. I'm surprised they haven't done a deep dive Into this to find out what they actually are?!

I hope your scan on 19th goes well? How far along will you be then? X

@maria2bela1 I know, the lack of information is very frustrating, my sonographer didnt even know what it was😅 from looking at forums etc it sounds like they mostly disapear by the 12 week scan🤞

I will be 9+1 at my next scan. How about you, when is your next scan?

maria2bela1 · 09/09/2023 01:37

My next scan will likely be week after next too, they said they'd send me a date and time. Part of me just doesn't even want to have any more scans, I find it so anxiety inducing. It would almost be good to just until 12 week scan and hopefully hear that it's cleared up! Really praying our little beans stay ok!

Hi @maria2bela1 how are you doing?

I had my second scan today-- Im still measuring 3 days behind what I thought I was so they said my due date is the 26th of April, I had thought it was the 23rd. But they said the baby is developing fine and has a good heartbeat.

The bump is still there and they said they dont know what it is but didnt seem concerned-- they said it is totally separate to the baby. I asked them to check its size and compare it to the last scan and they said it has gotten smaller, so I am hoping it will continue that trend and soon disapear🤞 its 2cm x 1cm at the moment.

They said they will see me next at my 12 week booking in appointment and rescan then too.

I hope all is well with you and your little baby :)

maria2bela1 · 19/09/2023 19:32

Hi @Janeykat That's amazing news! Definitely positive that it has shrunk in size and isn't located near baby. I personally have opted to not have any more scans until 12 week one. All of the in between uncertainty has caused quite a bit of anxiety and I feel like I'd just cope better waiting then leaving feeling reassured if that makes sense. So I guess we will both be updating here in 3 weeks time? :) Have you booked in with midwife yet? I need to fill out self referral online.

OP posts:
Janeykat · 20/09/2023 08:53

@maria2bela1 I totally understand the anxiety, it was a good idea to wait until 12 weeks as it will most likely be gone by then! Have you told family etc about your pregnancy? So far only my partner and my father know, I think I might leave everyone else until after the next scan.

Im in Ireland so the system is different here, its combined care between the GP and hospital, so I will be seeing the GP tomorrow to do bloods, weight etc and make everything official :) Do you get to see the same midwife throughout your pregnancy? And great that you can self-refer, that doesnt happen here or at least in the region Im in.

maria2bela1 · 21/09/2023 12:45

Hi, yes we've told immediate family and 1 of my friends. Yes in England it's just a self referral to local maternity dept then they contact you to come in and do weight etc, don't really see GP unless necessary in between or something. You don't see same midwife at every appointment unfortunately. Do you see same midwife in Ireland?

Janeykat · 21/09/2023 18:49

Aww thats nice, I must start telling people soon, Ive finally started to believe it😊
Im not sure about the midwives in Ireland, when I had my son 4 years ago it was a different one every time but I have heard the system has changed since then.
