Do I need to drink water for the 12 weeks scan?

Hi everyone,

I've just got a letter for my 12 weeks appointment, but there's no mention as to drinking water prior to the scan. I thought I'll have to have a full bladder?🤔

Did anyone have the same experience? What did you do?
I wonder whether I can just drink normally and don't go to the toilet till the scan?

Yes you need to drink 1.5 pints I think (hazy memory, it’s been a while…) about an hour before the scan then not go to the toilet. You definitely need a full bladder for this one.

A pint 30 mins before I was told, had my scan 4 weeks ago.

My letter said to drink water an hour before so I did do that. Half way through my scan she asked me to go to the toilet and empty my bladder but she did say its better to have a full bladder as you can easily empty it if you need to. I hope that helps :)

You are but I didn't. It was fine

I took a bottle with me had to go bathroom as bladder was to full and couldn’t see babies probably

I drank a pint and a half an hour before like you’re meant to and the sonographer told me off for drinking too much as my bladder was squashing the baby 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Thank you so much for all your replies!

So it seems like I will have to drink enough water before going to the scan🤔

I actually did drink like a pint of water before my private scan at 7 weeks and ended up feeling like my bladder was going to explode!😂I was kind of hoping I don't have to drink any water this time... but I'll have to drink some water again, then!

Yes you do, but it’s the last scan you need a full bladder for so don’t worry about it at your 20 weeks scan

I drank plenty and was bursting by the time of my scan. The sonographer had to send me out to do “half a wee” as I’d been a bit too enthusiastic about drinking enough.

MariaVT65 · 30/08/2023 17:51

I didn’t bother this time and it was fine.

This was after my first pregnancy when I drank lots of water and then had to go for a wee anyway before the appointment as they were running 40 mins late.
