confused about UTI’s

Hi ladies
just looking for some advice … over the weekend I was getting some pain when I wee so thought I’d drop a sample to the Dr today.
They said that my results for UTI were positive but they want to send to the lab to be sure before they prescribe me antibiotics and this could take a couple days.
i called triage who said that they would do the same even if the dip test is positive they won’t give antibiotics unless the lab confirms.

now I’m really confused as I’ve said before my midwife made such a hugeeeee deal about UTI’s, how important it is to treat asap, how they can cause preterm labour etc.
my understanding is that they shouldn’t be leaving it this long to treat a UTI ??
is this normal does anyone know?

Different infections need different treatments so they need to know which infection it is so they know which antibiotics to prescribe.

It's is ridiculous because the cultures miss alit of infections. NHS guidelines state that tests are inaccurate and GPs are meant to be treating by symptoms but it seems at lot of GPs are not up to date. You are also correct they can cause prem labour, I would speak to your midwife.

@Incomingwork thanks for replying. I know, different doctors say different things at this point … I did speak to the midwives and they said they were fine with the decision from the doctor and they’d do the same … I did question this and said I’m really concerned about preterm labour given the fact I’m 30 weeks, but they said until I feel unwell with fever, shivers, headaches, flashing lights etc, then it will be fine to leave it….

just so so odd as in my early pregnancy they did actually treat UTI with antibiotics even though the results didn’t come back positive. So now that I’m in my third trimester I find it so weird that they’re being really relaxed about it given the fact preterm Labour is probably more of a risk!
