Yet more bloody discharge

I’ve had spotting throughout my pregnancy and a larger bleed last week. Had a scan baby alive and well. Yesterday I had my proper dating scan, but baby was in the wrong position so we couldn’t get any measurements at all. I was sent up and down the stairs, did lots of jumping and the sonographer was quite firm with the scanner. We saw a heartbeat but got no other information.
Today I’ve been having some mild cramping and am yet again having fresh bloody when I wipe and in my pants - it’s not pure blood more bright pink discharge with flecks of blood.
They saw no cause on either scan for any bleeding. We told our DC about the pregnancy yesterday and they’re so excited so I’m finding the bleed today extra anxiety inducing.
Does anyone know what can cause pretty regular bleeds like this? I’m assuming it’s very unlikely I’ll have lost the baby since yesterday’s scan, but it’s all that jumps to your mind with cramps as well. I also
know I won’t get another scan before next weeks rescan.
I’ve been totally off sex for weeks (poor hubby) so it’s not that! I do seem to have consistent white blood cells in my urine since before pregnancy, I wonder if that could have something to do with it. I was put on a short course of antibiotics around 8 weeks but it didn’t seem to do anything.

This must be so worrying for you OP. I have no direct experience as such with the on/off bleeding but didn't want to read and run.

With regards to the dating scan and measurements, I also had this at my dating scan on Friday. Baby won't move so we couldn't get the neck measurements. It's good you've been booked for a rescan, our trust don't do this. I've instead been booked for a quadruple test in 2 weeks for down syndrome screening, and for Edwards and Patau we have opted to wait for our 20 week scan where these would be checked for, but also plan to talk to my midwife at 16 week appt about a Harmony Test and get more info on that.

With the bleeding, it's good that baby's heartbeat was identified and the sonographer otherwise seemed happy with baby at your scan and in a way it's good that they couldn't identify any issue that may be causing the bleeding, meaning there isn't anything obvious around baby that is a potential problem. I had bleeding as a one off at 14 weeks with DC1 and was told by the sonographer that not being able to see anything is usually a good sign. Pregnancy carried on all okay. Although I know it is worrying not having answers.

Are you able to perhaps ask your Midwife about interim reassurance scans or weekly appts where she can listen to baby on a doppler from 16 weeks, for your peace of mind given what you're experiencing? One of my friends was able to arrange this sort of agreement with her midwife because of anxiety and a history of loss.

I hope your rescan goes well next week and baby plays ball to get those measurements 🤞

Hi my lovely just wanted to hop on and tell you my experience. I bled all the way through my first pregnancy, some heavier bleeds, some just a bit of bloody discharge / spotting. It was caused by something called a cervical ectropion which is essentially the soft cells inside your cervix grow on the outside. Completely harmless to you and baby, just annoying and anxiety inducing when you don’t know what it is!! It can be caused by hormones so common in pregnancy. I didn’t just get the bleeding from having sex either, carrying heavy shopping bags, pushing the hoover around, going for a no 2, all caused bleeding! Definitely could be this and it’s really reassuring if they couldn’t see the bleed on the scan, that’s what they always said to me too. Xx

Thank you so much for replying both!

@Lottie917 how frustrating not to get a rescan - I’m sorry. That would really frustrate me, I’m guessing if the scan later this week also doesn’t work they may have to do the same as I’ll be too far along to accurately do the dating scan. How’re you feeling about it all?

Thank you @katie416 thats actually really helpful! Most of the problem for me is not knowing a cause and I never had anything like this with my previous two pregnancies so it’s thrown me a bit. Your explanation is good to hear, just as no one else has given me any alternatives so far! It does rather fit with my situation as well, I can’t pin point a single trigger and wondered now if all the activity trying to get baby to move during the scan caused this latest one. Did it carry on all the way through the pregnancy for you?

@ApparentlyGeriatric yeah it's frustrating a little. I think it's also because I thought I was 12 weeks but they dated me over 13 weeks and I know they can only do it up to 13+6, so maybe it was too tight of a turnaround too but when I asked about a rescan they said it wasn't their procedure 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm currently trying to reason with myself that the screening only gives a probability anyway and not a definitive answer, so there will be other opportunities for any possible issues to hopefully be identified.

I don't feel too bad actually, thanks for asking. If it had happened in my first pregnancy with DS I would have felt extremely anxious and looking into every possible private option to get those answers another way. I suffered with really bad prenatal anxiety last time that I had to get help for but this time around I feel better in myself. Still anxious and have some bad days but not anything like last time thankfully.

Hopefully, like @katie416 said, that might be the cause of the bleeding for you 🤞 and although it's annoying/ worrying still, it's good that it's completely harmless for you and baby.

That was my problem too, the not knowing!! I wasn’t officially diagnosed till about 25 weeks and I’d been bleeding from about 7 week on and off. Twice I went upto hospital (saw the same doctor) one with a really bad bleed at about 19 weeks where blood was literally dripping out of me into the loo and then again with a lighter bleed a few weeks later. First time they looked at my cervix said it was possibly coming from inside and I might have a low lying placenta so sent me for a scan, no low lying placenta and bleed not showing on scan. Second time she looked at my cervix again said possible ectropion and then when she’d finished I started bleeding heavily as I was standing up to get dressed. Said again she couldn’t really tell me why I was bleeding but it might be the ectropion.
I ended up at the maternity unit agaaain a few weeks after that with another lighter bleed, saw a different doctor this time and she was honestly my saviour 😂 I said I was worried about her making me bleed worse and she said she was good at avoiding that but if I did bleed she’d know what it was. She actually didn’t make me bleed but confirmed definite cervical ectropion. I still have it, it got better after birth but it came back at the beginning of this year and I had to go for a colposcopy as I was bleeding in between periods but again they just said it was the ectropion. Said I could have treatment to cauterise it but I decided not to. I’ve just found out I’m pregnant again so no doubt it’ll be back with a vengeance 🙃
Definitely could be that!! You also might see the blood straight away but also might not see it till a day or two after, sometimes takes a while to come out 🙈
It did carry on pretty much all the way through but once I knew what was triggering it I could avoid it and if I did bleed didn’t worry as much cos I knew what was normal for me. It’s honestly horrible and no one really talks about it I do feel for you xx

Hey I have had a similar situation, bleeding for approx 3 weeks or so (between 7-10 weeks) no reason could be seen on my scans. Mildish cramps. Mix between mild flow/spotting and blood mixed with discharge. Bright red bleed and brown at times. Was prescribed progesterone twice daily and bleed stopped the next day. Have seen it can be due to low progesterone levels but not sure how accurate this is. Had 12 week scan a few days ago and all great. Hope all continues to go well with your scans OP.
