7 week scan showed only 5 weeks pregnant

Hi all,
I should be about 6/7 weeks pregnant but my cycles have been a bit longer and slightly irregular due to having a miscarriage 3 months ago. We went for an early scan today at the EPU expecting to see something around 6-7 weeks but she told us it’s at about 5 weeks. It was a grim appointment as this was followed up by the post mortem results of our previous loss which was Patau syndrome. I’m feeling a bit blue and not hopeful. We’re going back in 2 weeks so it’s going to be a tough two weeks but wondered if anyone had any similar experiences and stories of success? Were you earlier than expected and did everything turn out ok?

Hello @Ceebeebee87

I had a similar experience and was dated 1 week 1/2 behind where I should be - I had irregular periods and was told at my first scan 5 weeks in June and then in July that I was only 6 weeks and 6 days with twins!

Had my first proper scan at the hospital yesterday and I am now 13 weeks 5 days and not expecting twins. (Exactly what I thought it should be).

They don't always get it right, but maybe as you are so early you will have more clarity in the next couple of weeks. It could be that you are only 5 weeks - as with my last period date I should be 2.5 weeks ahead of what I am.

Private scans were a massive relief for me, but of course not accesible to everyone.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks for your reply - massive congratulations to you, it gives me hope. I’ve been reading loads of success stories and that this can happen at early scans however my gut instinct tells me it’s another mc waiting to happen. I would just rather know now than wait two weeks.

I don’t think the measurements were wrong as it was done by a NHS consultant so the only thing I’m clinging onto is that I ovulated and implanted later. Good lunch with your pregnancy ❤️

First of all you are no more increased risk of another chromosomal problem than anyone else the same age following the previous loss.
Dating pregnancies at this stage is fraught with complications - the gestation depends on when you ovulated, when you conceived (not necessarily when you had sex), and when the pregnancy implanted. All of these have a couple of days of possibilities, easily combining to be a week out. Nobody can tell you it’s going to be fine because we don’t know, but many people will have good outcomes at the next scan. All you can do is give it time (and take folic acid).

I was measuring 12 days behind at around 8 weeks. I’m now 41+3 and patiently waiting their arrival!

Thanks again for your replies @Lilo2 that should say good luck not good lunch but who doesn’t love a good lunch 😂.

@khaa2091 I kinda wish we never had the scan now until a later stage as it has just filled us with doubt and worry. I will just have to keep myself busy for the next couple of weeks.

@LiquidGlee love to hear success stories like this. Good luck with the birth! Any day now 👏🏻👏🏻
