Folic Acid with high BMI

Just want some advice regarding Folic Acid. Currently 2+2 weeks pregnant and had been taking folic acid 400mcg for 2-3 months prior. Since finding out I am pregnant 3 days ago, I have switched to pregnacare max. I thought I had done everything right until I saw that women with a BMI over 30 (mine fluctuates between 30-32) have to take Folic Acid 5mg rather than the recommended 400mcg. I am freaking out! Will be contacting the GP today about this, but I just wanted to know:

  1. Those with BMI over 30 and took the normal 400mcg dose or no folic acid at all, how are your babies and what advice were you given by doctor/midwife.

  2. Those who maybe found out they were pregnant late and didn't take folic acid much, if at all, what advice were you given and how are your babies?

  3. Anyone with any kind of advice regarding this, please share as I would greatly appreciate it.

It seems as soon as I start to calm down over one worry, another pops to replace it. I am seeking further professional help regarding my anxiety (which is disgnosed and medicated) as I am aware many of my fears are related to worrying too much, but just wanted some advice.

My BMI is over 30 and I have been prescribed 5Mg folic acid and also told to continue with vitamins (I’m on the same as you). Your body will expel any surplus.

Contact your midwife/GP for 5Mg.

Midwife may also want you on aspirin also due to weight. Mines does.

OP if you could manage to gently lose some weight over the next few months then the risks for you and baby will also reduce. A couple of small changes done consistently might see your BMI fall below 30 since it sounds like youew not far off.
Well done for being so motivated early in your pregnancy!

My BMI is over 30. I got given a higher dose of folic acid at my booking in appointment (about 9 weeks) and it was only for four weeks. I've just had my 20 week scan and the little one is growing perfectly.

I've contacted the midwives and should get a call back today or tomorrow hopefully. Also managed to get a GP appointment for Tuesday, so I'm very glad about that. In the meantime I will continue to take my regular pregnacare max, but I have bought some folic acid only supplements on amazon and will take 1-2 extra each day (making my daily dose 800-1200iu/mcg).

Since finding out about baby, I've stopped drinking, changed my diet and hubby and I are trying to take at least a 30 minute walk most days. Just trying to do right by my much wanted and already loved baby. THANK YOU ALL for the advice! 😊
