Chances of amniotic fluid leaking at 15/16 weeks

Good morning ladies,

I am just looking for a bit of advice this morning, I am probably just worrying as I feel like I am constantly worrying about everything whilst being pregnant but I wondered what the likelihood is that I am leaking amniotic fluid at 15-16 weeks pregnant?

Since about a week and a half ago when I was almost 15 weeks pregnant I noticed an increase in what I am hoping is discharge but I am worried it could be amniotic fluid? It doesn't happen every day it has probably been 3 days since last Monday where there are small wet patches on my underwear.

They are not big patches and this is why I am trying not to be concerned but sometimes can happen 3 or 4 times a day? Is this just discharge?

Thank you ladies!

Yes just discharge. If it was water it would be continuous, in the later stages of pregnancy if you water went it could come and go as baby could block the cervix effectively plugging it, but that early baby is too small so it would just be continuous. It’s very normal to have a big increase in discharge during pregnancy as it helps to clean the vagina and prevent infections getting to the baby. Pantyliners are very helpful. As long as it’s clear/white and no odour it’s all normal

@PickledScrump Morning, thank you for your response :)

I do think I am just overthinking it but I also had a MC earlier on in the year (which was much earlier on at 9 weeks) but now every slight thing in this pregnancy I feel paranoid.

Have you experienced the same thing? The main reason I was really worried is because it just seems to be a larger amount than the normal discharge I was experiencing.. I have been getting increased discharge for a few weeks but it has been more white/creamy up until last week and then it just worried me as it seemed clear and thinner! I don't think it is even enough to fill a pantyliner, just leaves small wet marks on my pants...

@lmp69 im currently on pregnancy number 3 and have experienced it with all 3. Very normal for the discharge to change throughout the pregnancy. Sometimes it’s thin and watery, sometimes it’s more thick and sticky. Pregnancy is often not very glamorous. As I said I’d it was your waters at that stage it would be continuous.

@lmp69 If you're concerned you're leaking amniotic fluid I would recommend calling Triage and going in and getting checked to either put your mind at rest or put you on a different care path if needed. I had it at 17 weeks and they can do a quick swab which will test positive if there is any fluid there. This happened to me and I'm now having weekly monitoring.

@Charmainebelle Thank you for commenting.

If you don't mind me asking, how much were you leaking? Did it feel more of a gush or just felt like leaking? Also how far gone are you now?x

I had barely noticed to be honest - assumed it was just discharge definitely no gush. It was only as there'd been a tiny amount of blood that my sister made me go in to get checked. I'm 23 weeks now and all still looks fine, good amount of fluid around baby etc. They call it PPROM when you've had a premature leak which just puts you on a higher risk pathway I was told, so they check fluids regularly etc. I'm sure yours will just be regular discharge but just think it's helpful to hear all experiences as I wouldn't have known had I not gone in! x
