Should I call EPU

Hi all, I am pregnant with my first baby. I’m only 3w6d but since Saturday I have been having right sided pain in my abdomen, low down and just along from my hip bone. I tested positive at 9DPO which was Friday and am now 12DPO and have had good line progression on the tests. My period is due on Thursday.

I’m really worrying about the pain and feel this sense that something is wrong but I can’t tell if I am just being a hypochondriac.

Is this a normal pain? It’s been pretty constant since Saturday, paracetamol isn’t taking it away. I don’t really get period cramps but it’s kind of like a nagging, gnawing pain only in the one spot. I haven’t had any bleeding, nausea, fever or shoulder tip pain. Is it too early for ectopic symptoms? Should I call the early pregnancy unit? I’m worried they’ll think I’m being ridiculous given it’s so early.

It's such an anxious time! Pain can be normal in early pregnancy so I'd just keep an eye out for the other symptoms you're already aware - an ectopic pregnancy shouldn't cause any symptoms at this early stage and you wouldn't be able to see anything on scan anyway.

Good luck!

I agree with the comment above and if you could get your bloods done that should hopefully help too to make sure that it’s doubling as it should. If you go to the EPU they would be able to do an exam but it would be too early to do an internal US.

I was in a similar situation back in February however as I had a fresh IVF transfer I had a large cyst on my ovary that was causing pain and discomfort and all they could do for me was to keep checking my HCG.

I was in the same situation as you last week. I was having some dark brown discharge and crampy pain. I monitored it until I was 4w5d then went to EPU. Had a scan but they couldn't see anything. Had serial HCG levels done over 48 hours and they were happy it was rising adequately. The next day I had a repeat scan (3 days after the first) and they could see a gestational sac in the uterus. She wasn't sure if there was a yoke sac but said it was normal at this stage.

Fingers crossed the bleeding and pain have now stopped. Hope yours does too soon.

Thanks everyone. I phoned the EPU and they said they can’t see me until I’m 6 weeks. She did say that pain is normal and I can take more paracetamol and use a hot water bottle or take a warm bath to see if that helps it. She said if it got worse or I had any of the other symptoms I should go to A&E and if I really wanted I could go today. I think I’ll try what she suggested and give it some time especially as I should be too early for any of the symptoms really and I’m not bleeding. I’ve fell down a google hole and came across a corpus luteum cyst so maybe that’s what is. Hopefully it resolves soon.

@Bugdem123 I wouldn’t worry too much about ovarian cysts as they don’t have any impact on the pregnancy or the embryo. Also for them to be quite painful and to cause significant discomfort they would need to be quite large but even at that they EPU would probably not do anything unless you had a twisted fallopian tube or they were too large unfortunately.

Wishing you the best of luck with your pregnancy ❤️ and I hope the discomfort goes away soon.
