Accidentally drank alcohol - will it be ok?

Was out for dinner with a friend and ordered a non alcoholic cocktail. Sipped it, thought it tasted a bit strong, so checked with the waiter it was alcohol free - was assured that it was. Carried on drinking (probably drank 1/3rd of the cocktail) when another waiter rushed over and told me it had alcohol in it, and replaced it.

I’m really worried now I’ll have done damage to the baby (I’m only 9 weeks) 😞

It will be fine.

Scaevola · 07/08/2023 19:21

No there is absolutely no likely damage from having the occasional alcoholic drink

RosesAndHellebores · 07/08/2023 19:22

You will not have damaged the baby with one third of a cocktail. Or even a whole cocktail for that matter.

Yeswecan12 · 07/08/2023 19:22

It will be absolutely fine…I think you need to drink a bottle of vodka type quantities to harm the baby! I understand why you are worried though, I had a very anxiety ridden 2nd pregnancy and got in a tizz and called the midwife because I’d eaten a medium rare steak- I laugh at myself now 🙈

HirplesWithHaggis · 07/08/2023 19:22

Baby will be fine. Loads of women drink more than that because they don't know they're pregnant at your stage, and the babies aren't damaged. It's sustained drinking throughout that causes problems.

MILLYmo0se · 07/08/2023 19:24

Think of it this way, how many women drink alcohol - and a lot more than a third of a cocktail- not realising they are in the early stages of pregnancy? Dont be upsetting yourself over it - it is a sign that you ll obviously be a good mammy though!

Dogandbabymama · 07/08/2023 19:25

Thank you all so much, you’ve really reassured me 😊

You'll be fine, but you should complain to the restaurant and tell them what happened and that you're pregnant. If they'd served that to an alcoholic they could have triggered a relapse that killed them. If they'd served that to a Muslim they would have tricked them into committing a sin. Their lackadaisical attitude around potential unwanted food ingredients is shocking and I hope if they kill someone with an allergen that they are punished to the full extent of the law.

FlamingYam · 07/08/2023 19:27

You and your baby will be absolutely fine. Please don't worry. It is not one full drink which would also be fine. Drinking isn't good when pregnant but it that's not what you did. It's honestly so minimal.

That being said what the fuck are the restaurant playing at?! I hope you massively kicked off and didn't pay for your meal.

VinEtFromage · 07/08/2023 19:29

@Dogandbabymama

Honestly, it's not an issue at all. You worrying is much worse for your baby.

advice not to drink at all is largely because it's an easier stance to take than it being necessary and in the U.K., they don't trust women to be sensible, other countries do.

stop worrying, it's fine xx

HelloHello183 · 07/08/2023 19:31

Hello, do not panic. before i found out i was pregnant i went on a night out, when i found out a couple weeks later i felt so guilty. Everything was ok and he is now 3 months oldSmile

Comedycook · 07/08/2023 19:31

Nothing will happen...when I was pregnant, official advice was that women could drink a small amount of alcohol every week...can't remember how much..one unit maybe? Now the official advice is none. You're fine..stop worrying.

Pufflebow · 07/08/2023 19:32

Wow! You are your baby will be absolutely fine
but what we’re the restaurant playing at? What if you were prohibited by your religion? An alcoholic? Allergic? Or on medication that reacted badly? Or just driving home??
it’s bad enough for someone that’s pregnant or anyone who chooses not to drink alcohol for their health.
that sort of mistake could be catastrophic!

honestly you will be fine but i don’t drink and I would go ballistic at being given alcohol I didn’t want

CornishGem1975 · 07/08/2023 19:34

There really needs to be more education so women stop panicking over every tiny thing like this. Nothing bad will happen.

This is why I never risk non alcoholic cocktails. I think the potential for mistakes is too high. I don't drink anymore and would be absolutely distraught if I had accidentally done so because if someone else's mistake.

FunkyMonks · 07/08/2023 19:35

It will be fine same thing happened to me no damage strong willed 4 year old DD to prove all was fine.
But I get your panic I done the same was filled with panic.

fairymary87 · 07/08/2023 19:44

Baby will be ok x

Hiddenvoice · 07/08/2023 19:49

Please try not to worry, I don’t really drink but went out with my friends and drank a bit too much. Didn’t know at that point that I was 5 almost 6 weeks pregnant due to irregular periods. My baby was born completely fine!

Completely agree. We've survived as a race after all. But creating disproportionate fear is a very easy way to control. You will be fine. I drank as normal until 10 weeks as didn't find out I was pg until then (irregular periods and using birth control that failed). DD now 17 and fine.

Scarletthoping · 07/08/2023 20:34

@BiscuitsandPuffin i thought the same thing! Unbelievable.

@Dogandbabymama i would definitely send an email to complain so the management know this happened and can make sure there is more training and better checks for the future.
