Baby Girl Names

Hi Everyone,

After some back and forth with names (I haven't found girls names particularly easy), we've settled with the name Theodora. Surname is one syllable, so very short. What does everyone think? Ada and Florence were close runners up, I also liked Penelope but my partner wasn't keen.

I've had a few people turn their nose up at the name, I know it's quite long but I like that there's a variety of nicknames to use.. it also isn't a name I'm hearing often at the moment (Isla, Nova, Ivy etc.) Is it that bad!? I'm almost starting to doubt myself.

I am also struggling with baby girl names myself - already have one daughter. I'm not a fan of Theodora to be honest much prefer your other options of Florence or Ada or what about Adeline if you wanted something a bit longer x

@Tryingtoconceivenumber2 It's hard isn't it. I think we will use Florence if we have another girl.. possibly.. it just doesn't feel right to use this time around. I might change my mind when she's here though. I wanted something longer, old fashioned-ish, and not overly popular. Theodora is a mouthful but I do quite like that it can be shortened to Teddy, Thea etc.

Switching it round a bit, how about Dorothea?

SkaneTos · 31/07/2023 17:52

Theodora
Dorothea
Ada
Florence

All lovely names!

GoodVibesHere · 31/07/2023 17:57

Yeh I just find Theodora a bit cumbersome, somehow. But if you like it go for it.

Spanielsarepainless · 31/07/2023 17:59

I love it.

ES1986 · 31/07/2023 20:24

Ask yourselves if you like the name Thea, cos that’s what her friends will shorten it to.

Swoonworthy · 31/07/2023 20:33

I don’t like it, sorry! But it does fit your criteria of being longer, not too common and old fashioned. I do like Florence.

GreenAventurine · 31/07/2023 20:39

I love it.
We we were set with Violet for our daughter (due in November) but I keep seeing it everywhere along with the 💜 emoji haha. It’s totally out of the window now x

Peajee · 31/07/2023 20:39

I like it but if Isla, Nova etc are too popular for you then I would go for something else as I think it's becoming a lot more popular and is likely to be one of those names you think is unusual but then you're surprised when there's a couple of others in the class with that name.

GreenAventurine · 31/07/2023 20:40

I know a few Florence’s and I think Penelope is really on the rise too. Your choice is great - Thea is a lovely nickname

YallaYallaaa · 31/07/2023 20:46

I think you might find that the nicknames (Thea, Teddy, Dora) are relatively common, making Theodora feel a bit less special.

These have a similar vibe to me…

Beatrice/ Beatrix
Merryn
Tabitha
Xanthe
Marina
Miriam

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 31/07/2023 20:47

I really like your choice and agree that it's got lots of options for nicknames Wink

SarahShorty · 31/07/2023 20:51

Theodora is a nice name. I have a soft spot for some J names; Jessica, Jennifer, Jasmine etc

teatime2022 · 31/07/2023 21:01

Thank you all for the honest opinions. I’m not sure Theodora will ever become as popular as Isla , Nova etc .. I do still really like popular names like Florence etc but prefer a classic popular name.. if that makes any sense! I really liked Violet too but wanted to steer away from flower names because of our last name. It’s tough and I’ve actually found that I’m not a fan of many girl names 🫣🫣

Theodora was actually one our list with our eldest, but he turned out to be a boy 🤣 I’ve learnt that the biggest mistake you can make it “pitch” names to people. I found people really turned their names up at names I loved, whereas if they’re presented with a baby with that name, they’re much less judgemental. So I think if you present them a physical Theodora, they’ll be fine with it. Just go with what YOU want ❤️

Some other names on our girl list were;

Verity
Liberty/Libby
Inez
Meryl
Sylvie
Maggie
Minty (Araminta)
Pearl
