Parma Ham in Pregnancy

Help! I’m currently 13+5 and today I’ve eaten Parma Ham in a toastie without realising that it’s on the no go list. It wasn’t cooked, how worried should I be? Has anyone else eaten this and not had any issues? I know this probably sounds ridiculous but I’m in panic mode over flipping ham!

Don't panic, this was one of the few foods that didn't make me throw up in one of my pregnancies, ate tons of the stuff!

Nellie1209 · 30/07/2023 17:38

This makes me feel so much better! Thank you! Did you eat it uncooked?

If it was in a toastie then has it not been heated during the toasting process?

Nellie1209 · 30/07/2023 17:40

It was more like the bread was toasted but the filling didn’t seem overly hot. It wasn’t like a sealed toastie if that makes sense?

I'm sure it'll be fine. I'd just make sure future cured meats are heated more before eating.

PickledScrump · 30/07/2023 17:51

You and your baby will be fine, the risk is still very minimal.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 30/07/2023 17:53

I are a pizza with Parma ham on it about 2 weeks ago - didn't realise. I'm 23 weeks pregnant now and all seems ok x

eurochick · 30/07/2023 17:54

Cooked Parma ham is fine. Stop worrying.

dementedpixie · 30/07/2023 17:59

@Tryingtoconceivenumber2 the parma ham on a pizza will be cooked and that's fine to eat

PastTheGin · 30/07/2023 18:00

It’s not advised to eat Parma ham, but the associated risk is very, very low. You and your baby will be fine!

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 30/07/2023 18:01

@dementedpixie I'm not sure if it was added after as it wasn't baked in to the cheese x

Yes, straight out of the packet. That, apples and bags of pre chopped ice berg lettuce was all I ate for weeks, no bad effects at all. The risk is tiny, you'll be OK, baby will be fine!

I've also been eating parma ham but also came on here to recommend "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster. It really helped me understand the guidelines of what you can and can't eat and reassured me on a lot of things. It sets out the scientific basis of a lot these restrictions so you can make your own mind up as to the relative risks involved.

It really saved me when I was a nervous wreck during my first trimester and felt so confused and despondent about what I could and couldn't eat!

Another recommendation for this book. It's so refreshing to read how the guidance is linked to scientific evidence (or not...).

I didn't know you weren't supposed to it , I've always eaten during pregnancy
