Light brown discharge and cramping…. 5+2

Hello,
i am 5wks+2 and this is my first pregnancy. I’ve got light brown discharge this morning each time I go to the loo. Plus have had quite a bit of cramping overnight and this morning. (Also am bloated and think I have trapped wind sorry for TMI)

Dr Google is giving mixed messages… some saying this is common and normal. Others saying it could be start of miscarriage…

Should I call my GP to get checked? I haven’t had a booking appointment with the midwife yet so don’t know if I can call them?

Has anyone experienced similar? Am I overreacting?

I've had all sorts of bleeding and it's been fine so far (week 11) they couldn't find a reason for it and I last got scanned 9 + 4 and had grown perfectly since the previous scan.

It's so worrying and makes you anxious seeing blood I know but it CAN be ok xx

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 09:58

@Mangotango39 - ah thanks so much for replying. That's really reassuring. Thank you! It really is so worrying!

@Scarletthoping think I have ticked off all the colours, pink, brown , red 😂

have an early scan if you think it'll give reassurance but try to make it around 7 weeks so you can be sure to see what you should x

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 10:47

@Mangotango39 ha!! Lots to look forward to then.

I’ve got an early scan booked in for 7 weeks anyway so will try and hang on until then xx

@Scarletthoping perfect! It'll feel like a long wait but hopefully here before you know it for some reassurance 🙏

Han1234 · 26/07/2023 11:57

I don’t want to cause unnecessary worry but I had the same at just over 5 weeks pregnant last week, I didn’t even realise I was pregnant until a few days before.

i would say if the cramps and bleeding doesn’t persist it could just be the usual stretching pains you can get early on, but mine went away and then came back a few days later but the brown blood turned to red and cramps intensified massively, I’d already spoken to the doctors about it who said it was all normal and it ended up in me being rushed into surgery for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy a few days later which was all very manic but I sort of knew ? I just knew something wasn’t right.

I didn’t even know I could get in touch with EPU myself which luckily I did or it could have been a totally different story as I’d of still been waiting for an early scan at 6 weeks.

I spent hours in bed looking on similar threads for assurance that the bleeding and cramping can be normal in the early stages and I think a lot of times it can be but I think it is something that shouldn’t be ignored if they get worse.

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 12:04

@Han1234 Thanks so much for this. It’s honestly useful to know. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Hope you’re OK.

The discharge has stopped now but I will keep my eye out in case it starts again like it did for you.

Thanks again for your honesty! It’s so hard when it’s all new and you have no idea what to expect or what’s normal. And every pregnancy is different too. But it’s good to know what to look out for.

sending love xx

Sorry I feel bad leaving such negative information but I just feel like I want to warn others of the signs now, if they are experiencing something slightly similar, don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet what’s happened tbh!

if it’s stopping then hopefully that’s a good sign for you so fingers crossed for you!!

I think the main thing for me was everyone says it’s a one sided pain - which I had none of so didn’t think of that. Everyone’s different aren’t they.

really hope all goes well! X

@Scarletthoping
It is such a worrying time and you're conscious of every little twinge in your body. I had a miscarriage which started with severe cramps one evening and the bleeding started the next day. Even with just the cramps I knew something wasn't right. I called the GP and got booked in for a scan at the EPU and they confirmed it.
I'm pregnant again now but started having some brown discharge at about 6 weeks which of course sent me google crazy like you! But I knew the cramps felt different and the discharge settled quickly. I had an early scan at 8 weeks and they confirmed everything was fine Smile
I guess I'm trying to say that you generally instinctively know if somethings ok or not but if you're at all concerned then speak to a healthcare professional- no one is ever going to say your being stupid. They take these things pretty seriously!

MrsW9 · 26/07/2023 13:29

I had this - it started at 5+4. I rang my hospital's EPU and they were really helpful - gave some info on what to look out for, in what situations I should ring back, etc., then asked me to ring again two days later with an update. When I reached 6 weeks with no change, they booked me in for a scan, which all seemed ok (no sign of what caused the bleeding, which went on for another ten days or so). I'm only at 9 weeks now so still early days, but nothing to suggest anything is wrong. I know that this is not everyone's experience, but it seems to be one of those things that can be fine or can be not fine. If you are able to ring your EPU they may be able to help. Fingers crossed for you.

prayforthecottransfer · 26/07/2023 13:50

I had this in my 3rd pregnancy at this gestation . He's now laying in my arms at 7 months old.

Bc102 · 26/07/2023 13:50

Hi I also had this light discharge at 6 weeks was convinced it was another misscarrige, stomach bloated felt like I was coming on my period, went for a scan everthing was fine, stomach went down after a couple of days brown discharge continued for few weeks had another scan since and everthings fine and baby has grew perfect xxx

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 14:26

@Han1234 awww don’t feel bad! Knowledge is power ❤️ Thank you xx

@PrettyPeony - thanks so much for this! And so sorry for your loss. I’ve contacted my GP and am waiting to hear back from them. So glad to hear that they take these things seriously. Really hope everything goes well with this pregnancy xx

@MrsW9 - ah thank you! Didn’t know I could call the EPU directly! Thanks. Reassuring to know everything is OK with your pregnancy! Xx

@prayforthecottransfer awww thanks for this! Very reassuring xx

@Bc102 - this is also what it feels like for me! Thanks so much! Really glad everything is going well for you xx

@Scarletthoping I think it might be different for different hospitals, but for mine I was able to ring directly (but sounds like you are already in contact with your GP, which is great)

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 21:27

Thanks again everyone! My GP told me to go to hospital to get checked. The blood tests I had came back normal but I have to go to a different hospital to have a scan tomorrow (the one I went to no longer has an EPU). Hopefully everything is OK. The doc didn’t seem worried 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Scarletthoping · 26/07/2023 21:28

@MrsW9 - yeah it is different here. I found out you can’t self refer. It has to be through a GP or A&E. But I’ll be going to them tomorrow!

Thanks for all the kind messages the other day. We ended up at the hospital (my GP sent me there) and had bloods taken. The tests came back fine but we were sent to the EPU yesterday and were told the pregnancy is developing "perfectly". Phew. Saw the yolk sac and the sonographer could just about make out the baby although it was so small as I'm only just over 5 weeks. It was such a relief though. I had the fear I was having an ectopic pregnancy as the pain was mostly on the left hand side.

Now we are under the early pregnancy services so have to go back in two weeks for another scan to double check everything is OK. Quite pleased about this as it means we can cancel the private scan we booked that week and also means I can call them up whenever if I'm worried about anything which feels reassuring.

Anyway thanks again!

I'm so glad everything went well with your scan!!! Smile
You can spend hours googling to try and reassure yourself but in the end it's always best to seek help! And I'm glad they're keeping a close eye - you might even be able to see a heartbeat in the next scan! Congratulations xx

Scarletthoping · 28/07/2023 15:00

@PrettyPeony Thanks so much! Eeeek that will be amazing! I think I'll cry for sure. xxx
