Antenatal appointment after 20 week scan?

I had my 20 week scan on Friday, told by sonographer all perfectly normal and that was that.

I’ve just now received a text saying I’ve got an antenatal telephone call booked in for next week! Need to me, and no idea why.

My first born was borderline small and so I have extra growth scans booked in in a couple months, but why this sudden appointment? I can’t help but feel something has been flagged on the 20 week scan.

Has anyone had this happen? Do they tend to leave it this long if something has been picked up, or would they have been in touch sooner?

If something had been picked up they would have told you then and there. You have an appointment at 24 weeks, maybe your trust is doing that one over the phone and a bit earlier. I wouldn’t go worrying about it

@PickledScrump I am worried though, because there was something off the charts that seemed abnormal to me (and Google!) despite what the sonographer said.

When you say I have an appointment at 24 weeks, what do you mean? there has been no mention to me of a 24 week appointment.

If something had been picked up they would tell you straight away & I'd imagine in person not over the phone,I know when complications in both my pregnancies were picked up, I was told immediately & everything explained & next steps(both all good thankfully)

@PickledScrump Oh, yes. I already have a 24 week midwife appointment booked in, but this is with the antenatal dept. So, a consultant.

I would imagine it's a consultant appointment due to baby 1 being broader line small.

I am in the same boat, DD classed as small for gestational age, 6lbs 1oz at 40+2, otherwise healthy and home the same day.

I had my 20 week scan on the 12th July and the booked me in for the consultant on the 21st. I'm hoping to then get referred back to midwife care as I had a very straightforward pregnancy and labour last time x

PickledScrump · 24/07/2023 20:30

@randommangoandpear its likely just because of having a smaller baby last time then. As I said if something pops up on the scan they will tell you immediately, best to stay away from google. If you’re that worried just ring your midwife and ask them. But if you’re having extra scans because of a previous small baby then you would be under consultant care.

Thanks all. I already have 2 consultant appointments booked in for after the 32 and 36 week scans, wasn’t expecting this one but perhaps it just slipped through the net initially.

@Tryingtoconceivenumber2 curious. Are you on aspirin? System flagged it for me at booking, however consultant said my son was small for gestational age rather than IUGR, so I needn’t take aspirin. I didn’t, but now I’m worried because the Doppler PI reading was very high, albeit under the threshold for any further scans etc. My son was 6lbs3 at 40+6

@randommangoandpear very similar then. No they haven't mentioned that they did however say it was her size combined with the fact I'm over 35, though only 36! I had to move appointment so I have it Friday now so will see what they say.

Everything else fine so far though iron levels, blood pressure, scans etc. I do feel that this baby is bigger but I could be wrong x

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 25/07/2023 08:36

@randommangoandpear also we are quite a small family in terms of size. No big babies etc so I think we are all just smaller than average build so could just be genetics x

I spoke to antenatal reception this morning who confirmed that anyone under consultant/shared care gets an appointment after the 20 week scan, regardless of whether it was normal or not.
