I’m 11 weeks and I accidentally ate pate in a restaurant. I completely forgot I wasn’t allowed it until I was halfway through and now I’m in a panic.

Someone help 😩

You will most likely be absolutely fine.

What kind of pate was it?

xTinkerbell · 21/07/2023 15:08

@Whataretheodds duck liver, I didn’t have too much of it but I know you shouldn’t have liver when pregnant I just didn’t realise

You’ll be fine - the guidance is very precautionary

Pitstop1986 · 21/07/2023 15:09

If it was just a one off meal, it would be absolutely fine. We are warned off pate due to the high vitamin A content, which if eaten regularly over a prolonged period can cause problems.

A one time eating pate won't have caused any harm at all! Try to relax!

As a one off meal I wouldn't worry. It's the cumulative effect of eating it several times a week that might lead to too much vitamin A.

Topseyt123 · 21/07/2023 15:16

I'm sure you'll be fine. The advice not to have liver or liver products (like paté) is precautionary. It doesn't mean that a problem is definitely going to occur.

Many, many years ago (when my mother was pregnant with me in 1966) doctors used to advise pregnant women to eat liver because it is rich in vitamin A and folic acid. That advice had certainly changed by the time I had my own first baby in 1995, but I should think few babies were actively harmed by it.

HowcanIhelp123 · 21/07/2023 15:28

A one off shouldn't be enough vitamin A to cause harm, and that's the main issue with pate. Too much vitamin A is also a problem for non-pregnant people and advice is to eat liver no more than once per week. As with everything else, they up the guidance even more with pregnancy to be even more cautious. Just keep away from it from now on, make sure any supplements you're taking don't have vitamin A in them.

When I was pregnant. A long time ago. Pate was my craving. I ate buckets of the stuff it was before anyone worried about certain foods so honestly don't panic it was one meal

flexigirl · 21/07/2023 16:08

Pate was one of my cravings along with seaweed and as I had severe hyperemesis I'm afraid I lived on these two foods for the whole pregnancy ! Please try not to worry too much OP 💐💐

Thank you everyone, it’s not something I normally eat so went right out my head that I’m not supposed to. I’m a worrier so got into. huge panic but feel a little better now

@HowcanIhelp123 Thank you! It’s not something I’d often eat so didn’t even realise. May supplements definitely haven’t any vitamin A in them & it’s not a mistake i’ll make again
