What week for sex scan?

Wat week would you book a private scan to find out the sex? Pregnant with my first and lots of mixed guidance online with some saying 14, 16 and 20 weeks.

We got ours at 18 weeks 😊 Wanted to do a thing over Christmas with both families!

Any reputable private place won't do it before 16 weeks, so not before then. If you're willing to wait until 20 then you can find out at the 20 week anomaly scan anyway.

Ahh I was hoping for earlier than that as I want to do similar and I'll be 15 weeks when everyone will be easily available!

My DD was scanned at 15 weeks as they wanted to see if DT were identical. She was told the sex of each which was correct.

Thanks @Enforceddrysummer I might go ahead and book for 15 weeks and if I can't find out then at least I get to see baby again!

My local private clinic offers sexing scans from 13 weeks, so at 13 weeks we found out we are having a baby girl. This has since been confirmed multiple times, most recently 3 weeks ago at 36 weeks. She is definitely a baby girl who is hopefully making her appearance tomorrow!

I think I was 14 or 15 weeks when we found out the sex. It was accurate!

PickledScrump · 21/07/2023 14:15

The genitals aren’t formed until around 14/15 weeks so 16 is the earliest you’d want to go, even then there’s been a lot of people who have been told incorrectly as it’s early and it really isn’t advised to go before 16 weeks. Waiting until 20 weeks is more reliable though. I get the impatience but better to get an accurate answer than having to go through the disappointment of being told wrong

You can try before 16 weeks but accepting you may get the wrong result. I think the rule is, if they say boy then you can be fairly sure it is, but not if they say girl (because the genitalia may not yet be fully formed).

GigiAnnna · 21/07/2023 14:34

16 is usually the earliest they will do a sexing scan in a private place.

Wheresmyrobe · 21/07/2023 14:45

Thanks everyone, I think I'll just wait until 16 weeks to be certain. The place near me does them from 13 or 14 weeks but I thought that was odd so didn't book it!

16 weeks gives you around 90 percent accuracy xx

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 21/07/2023 19:47

Why don't you have a NIPT test and then you will know. Can be taken from 10 weeks.

Wheresmyrobe · 24/07/2023 09:16

@OhhhhhhhhBiscuits I looked into these but they are mega expensive!

There is a thing called a sneak peek test which ranges from £80-£120. Which is a blood test which will tell you, I think it's basically the same tech as the NIPT but only looking for sex rather than anomalies. We've booked one because the sonographer said she thought it was a girl but couldn't be 100% sure. Not had it yet though so it's not a review yet!!
