GROUP B STREP

Hi guys,

does anyone know what group b strep is and is this dangerous for the baby?

my midwife mentioned something regarding getting a swab for this and if it comes back positive you'll be on antibiotics. She was talking about so much so I've kinda forgot the details about it and when I look online it makes it sound like it's so serious and can harm the baby.

anyone had this before?

thanks x

@Bunny2006 did they let your partner up to ward with you while you got the antibiotics? We're you allowed out for a walk or anything between doses? Asking as the midwives have literally told me no info

@Lemonandginger1 Yes I put straight in the delivery room I gave birth in, so partner was allowed to stay. I wasn't allowed to go anywhere between doses though. I could wheel the IV drip line around so walked around the room but I wasn't allowed to leave with it

Bit of a bump to this thread.

I’m 17 weeks and it has shown on a swab so I am starting the antibiotic tablets. I know it may go before baby is born but rather be safe.

has anyone else had this early pregnancy?

mumtotwox · 11/09/2023 17:22

@BEO Was it found in your urine? I know they recommend antibiotics there and then for that but if it's just from a vaginal swab they give you antibiotics in labour x

BEO · 11/09/2023 17:33

No it was a vagina swab as I had complained of yellow/green discharge so she swabbed me last week and had antibiotics prescribed today . Wonder why they do it differently for different people x

I was routinely tested for it the first time round (2014) and tested positive so they said I’d have to have antibiotics during labour and have to give birth in a hospital. All was absolutely fine.
Second time round a couple yrs later they said they didn’t test for it but I pressed for them to do so as I actually really wanted a hospital birth (they were offering midwife led birthing centre). Anyway I tested positive so got my hospital birth which ended up saving mine and baby’s lives (nothing to do with the group B strep).

I only learnt relatively recently though that GBS is usually acquired from receiving oral sex which is a bit 😳 . I did ask the midwives how come I had it and they always were pretty vague 😬

@BEO Oh that's interesting! I guess it's more because it can keep coming back even after you have antibiotics... will you get tested again around 35-37 weeks?

BEO · 11/09/2023 18:08

I have no idea no one has spoke to me about it! Had a text from GP survey saying I have an infection and have a prescription to collect. Logged on to badger seen Step B . Have text my midwife but heard nothing. Don’t want to continue with antibiotics if it’s pointless. Everything I read online says they don’t offer antibiotics before labour as it’s pointless unless it is causing a UTI which mine isn’t . So waiting on some clarification.

Yeah definitely worth checking 😊 @BEO

Is that actually true though? Ive done a lot of GBS research after my daughter was in NICU with GBS sepsis and every official medical website ive read says that researchers still don't know for sure how it spreads? If you have a link, I'd be really interested to read.

They didn't find Group B Strep until I was about 35 weeks' pregnant so too late for antibiotics. During labour they gave me a drip of antibiotics for about 20 minutes every four hours. Baby had antibiotics for 24 hours after birth, bloods came back clear and he had no trace of it. I wish they would automatically test for it though.
