Spotting/cramps at 5 weeks

I have just recently found out I am pregnant, around 5ish weeks I think. I have had an ectopic before so I’m extremely anxious & even though I had a healthy pregnancy following the ectopic, I still have a lot of anxiety around pregnancy. I started spotting pinkish blood yesterday when wiping, after phoning EPU they told me it could just be implantation bleeding. Overnight it became very red & I had a lot of cramps, needing to take paracetamol for the discomfort. The bleeding today has went to a brown colour & only on wiping but I still have constant uncomfortable cramps, not particularly painful.

I understand no one can tell me for sure, but do you think this is sinister or is this normal for early pregnancy?

So sorry OP for your bad experience.

I can share my personal experience and when I had something similar for me it turned out to be a chemical. Really hope it's not your case.

Fingers crossed.

@BabyHope1 thank you for your reply. I’m sorry for your loss. How did you know that it was a chemical? Did you just take another test & it was negative? I have an early scan booked for the end of the month with EPU to ensure I don’t have another ectopic but unsure if this is a loss or not.

Tests turned negative or very light positives. Then bleeding started heavily. I also had a scan to confirm it. Take care!

I have had this go either way. I had a chemical in January which started off with pinkish bleeding when I wiped. It eventually got heavier on the daily and I had it confirmed as chemical from HCG blood tests.
I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and this pregnancy on both weeks 5 and 6 I had heavy bleeding, passing clots, cramping the lot. I had scans in EPU and on both occasions a heart beat was seen. The bleeding turned brown and stopped completely after 2 weeks. They said I had a small subcronic hematoma. I know it’s hard when you’re going through it at the time, but sadly only time will tell. Best of luck xx

@Kimbo1988 sorry, I wish I had any advice but I’m unsure as well. I really think anything at this stage is a “wait & see” game which is driving me crazy.

@Sophiey11 thank you so much for replying. I’ve had a chemical years & years ago & that came on like a full blown period so I knew I was losing that baby. This time, it came on very pinky/orangey then brown, then bright red & now it’s a browny discharge (sorry for the tmi) colour like the end of a period. I hate just having to wait things out & it’s making me so anxious. Thank you for sharing your experiences & that one was a success story, I need that to remain slightly hopeful.

I’ve had quite a lot of bleeding over the last week but my pregnancy test lines are getting stronger. Is this a good sign or am I being delusional? Would they start to weaken by now?

My HCG dropped pretty quickly with my last 2 MC. With my chemical after 48 hours of bleeding I think they were as low as 28 then 5. If your HCG lines are getting stronger this could be a good sign? Especially if the bleeding is getting brown. That’s what happened with mine. It was brown discharge for a few days before stopping, I haven’t had anything since and now 23 weeks. Got everything crossed for you and hope it’s a good outcome xx

Newmama29 · 18/07/2023 11:35

@Sophiey11 thank you for replying! Initially the blood of mostly brown but for the last 2 days it’s been very red & quite heavy, like a period, so I had really lost a lot of hope but this mornings test line is definitely stronger. I don’t know what to think

@Newmama29 it could be worth contacting your EPU again to see if they can do an early scan or bloods? Due to my history they let me have an internal scan at 5 weeks. They did also say around 5 weeks is when you can get implantation bleeding. This is my 5th pregnancy, and only this one did I bleed and weirdly it’s also the only successful one so far. So it doesn’t always mean MC but if it’s been going on this long I’m sure there’s something they could do for you? Xx

Newmama29 · 18/07/2023 11:40

@Sophiey11 due to a previous ectopic I already have an early scan on the 28th, I phoned EPU who told me they won’t bring it forward because I’d only be around 6 weeks & they still might not see anything with it being so early so would probably need to get me back in next week anyway so instead of reassuring me it could be unnecessary worry 👎🏼. I really appreciate your replies & I’m glad you’re pregnancy is going healthy, I hope I have the same success story!

@Newmama29 that's so frustrating for you. If you have any HCG strip tests you could do those daily and keep an eye on the line progression. It should double every 48 hours so they should continue to get darker. If you can see them getting lighter that could be a sign of MC. Best of luck, keep us updated xx

AlwaysaLittleBitTired · 18/07/2023 11:46

Keeping everything crossed for you. I had a very similar experience at 5 weeks with dc1. Quite strong cramps and intermittent sharp pains, with lots of bright red blood for 2-3 days. Too early for a scan, so I was advised it was likely a mc and to rest. Dc1 is now 16yo.

My mum told me that she had bleeding around the same time with her first, and then frequently each month.

There really is no way to tell, but I will hope for the best for you.

Newmama29 · 18/07/2023 14:38

@Sophiey11 i have bought a pack of 20 from Amazon which I’ve been using daily & so far are getting stronger so fingers are crossed 🤞🏼

@AlwaysaLittleBitTired thank you, I’ve been having quite red bleeding for around 3 days now but cramps have stopped, however the amount of bright red blood is scaring me a bit!

Thank you both for replying, I really appreciate the advice & reassurance!

@Newmama29 how are you doing hun? Xx

Newmama29 · 23/07/2023 09:14

@Sophiey11 continued to bleed for about a week. EPAS have brought my scan forward to tomorrow so I’ll be glad to get it over with but I don’t have much hope. I took a digital test & it still says 1-2 weeks pregnant which it said 2 weeks ago 👎🏼

@Newmama29 im so sorry. I’ve got everything crossed for you for tomorrow xx

Chica1990 · 24/07/2023 18:39

How did it go today @Newmama29? the bleeding with positive tests happened with my ectopic. I hope this isn't the case for you 🤞🏻

Newmama29 · 24/07/2023 19:58

Unfortunately it looks like it’s been an early miscarriage. Thank you for everyone replying!
