Food poisoning while pregnant

Hi all, I’m 21 weeks pregnant and had the worse stomach bug of my life on Sunday. I woke up at 4am with belly pains, cold sweat and proceeded to spend most of Sunday in the loo (😓sorry for the details). I spoke to my midwife line and managed to see a GP the same day who did a urine test (not sure why?). They didn’t seem concerned and said to get in touch if I start vomiting or bleeding which I didn’t.

By Monday afternoon I was fine and didn’t have any symptoms other than diarrhoea. I then did the mistake of googling whether this could had been a bacterial infection (salmonella, listeriosis etc.) or just a stomach bug. I’m beyond scared that this may had been something serious which would impact my baby - I saw a few things like meningitis 😱

Has anyone had a similar experience? Just looking for some reassurance at this stage.

I had the worst stomach bug at 26 weeks, both ends, raging temp and couldn't keep a sip down. They check urine for signs of dehydration which I think shows in ketones and possibly protein, don't quote me on that though. Mine was off the chart so I was admitted to hospital for IV fluids and IV paracetamol for temp. 4 bags later and overnight stay and I was much better, still weak for a bit and had to take it slowly but ultimately we were both fine.

Keep drinking as much water as you can, if you start being sick get your urine tested again. Any concerns don't hesitate to contact your midwife again

They worry about food poisoning because the response of emptying your bowels and stomach can also trigger emptying your womb, ie causing a miscarriage.

It sounds like you’re over the worst of it so no worries about permanent harm to the baby. Stay hydrated and take it easy xx
