Panicking - Flank pain right side

Hi there

I messaged a few days ago about various symptoms I had despite it being early in pregnancy. Today (4 weeks 1 day) I've had flank pain in my right side which alternates between dull and more severe. I tried to take the advice on this group and just relax, but when it was feeling more severe I rang the midwife number I was given, and they've stated this isn't a typical symptom of pregnancy at my stage and it sounds like I may have a UTI which needs to be caught quickly, and to hand a sample at GP straight away.

I've done this, but the GP receptionist has shown a total lack of urgency even when she could see I was almost in tears. I feel in a complete panic and I'm really really worried that this is already the beginning of the end for my journey.

If not a UTI, then what else could it be and should I be worried?

Thank you

You do get aches and pains in pregnancy, it’s the ligaments stretching while everything grows.
Wait until you get the dagger up the vagina pain ! That was surprising.

Thanks for your reply. The midwife has confirmed though that this pain isn't typical of pregnancy at my stage though and is likely an infection and needs investigating either way?

I would disagree, but it’s been a long time since I was a midwife !

OP I’m sorry you’re feeling so anxious.

If it’s a UTI, it’s easily treated.

If it’s in your flank it’s probably not pregnancy related at all, so you need to think how you usually would if you weren’t pregnant.

At this stage, there is really nothing you can do, and worrying about it won’t make you any less likely to have a miscarriage. Try to just take each day as it comes. I know early pregnancy is a horribly long wait.

could you see if any pharmacies dip test samples? they do here, and will prescribe if needed

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't expecting it to feel so hard so early on. I know I've done everything I can so far and i definitely need to try and relax, but it's just such a worry when it's something we want so so much.

Sounds pretty normal to me! So much going on in your body in these early days.

Go and do a dip test if it will put your kind at ease but it you don't have any other UTI symptoms then it's probably not that.

You're going to have lots of inexplicable aches and pains throughout your pregnancy - you really do just have to roll with the punches.

Thanks for reply. Midwife said its too early for the round ligament pain and she said it didn't sound typical to have flank pain at my stage. The urine sample is at GP and have appointment at 2.15pm

Thanks for reply. I've handed a sample in at GP and I have an appointment at 2.15pm (was actually for something else more routine but I feel this is taking priority to sort out)

Thanks all.for the helpful replies. I do feel a little better that some have experienced this, and also that, if a UTI, I've at least tried to action it ASAP.
Fingers crossed I can keep a big calmer from here

How did you get on? @Khanga27

Khanga27 · 30/06/2023 18:46

The dip test didn't show an infection but theyve also sent off to be sure so would hear for certain in a few days. My flank felt better this afternoon but has been a little off tonight so trying to lie/sit straight.

Doctor also gave me some reassurance about my inhalers despite what leaflets said about not taking them if pregnant so I feel a lot more at ease about that too.

I am just quite nervous but I know realistically I've done what I can, and just need to try and chill out.

Thank you for checking in 😊

Really glad things are clear and easing a little bit.
You could always see if a heat pad helps which are safe.
I had a really helpful Dr who told me that almost all medication will say not to take when pregnant because it literally comes down to not doing drug trials on pregnant woman so even though they know something is safe or the pros outweigh the cons they can't be labelled as safe for use in pregnancy.
Hope that helps x

Did u find out what it was?

Khanga27 · 25/02/2024 16:45

Potentially muscular as it did ease off, but unrelated I did have a missed miscarriage discovered at a private scan. I’m since pregnant again at 13 weeks and been a bit calmer about general aches and pains
