Hello :)
Help a mama out - worrying!!!
I had a dip in the sea yesterday (15 degrees Celsius), was in for about 3 mins. Water felt chilly, but I felt totally fine afterwards.
worried now I might have done something wrong re baby!!!

But what are you afraid of?

Deep breath, you're totally fine. I swam through the winters in both my pregnancies (down to 4 degrees!!) and it was great for me and the baby. Swimming makes you calmer and happier and later on it will be fantastic to feel weightless, believe me.

It's also worth remembering that despite scare stories it is actually quite tough to harm the foetus once they're settled, your whole body is designed to protect it. So relax, enjoy it and congratulations!

I swam in the sea loads during my first pregnancy and a few times with my second, at varying stages (earliest was 6 weeks and latest was 36 weeks, although I swam in a pool until 41+ weeks with both - the water helps you to feel much more comfortable)!

Swimming is absolutely fine. If it was safe to swim somewhere pre-pregnancy, it's safe now. The only exception (and this won't apply for a while!) is if your waters break (you should avoid the swimming pool if your waters break due to infection risk, as the baby is no longer sealed off).

This is absolutely fine OP.

Thank you! I was worried about how cold it was, I’ve read things that say don’t swim in too cold water as it might change core temp. So now I’m worrying!! Gahh!!

I swam in the sea (or sometimes a lake) all through my first pregnancy as it was lockdown and I have a back condition that flares up if I don't swim! No ill effects.

Lcb123 · 22/06/2023 06:38

I’ve done it last week! And will continue to do so, also in a lido. The only danger would be if you got hyperthermia but you’d have to stay in pretty long. I

Just check pollution levels - has any sewage overflowed into sea?

It’s generally a bad idea to swim in the sea for a couple of days after heavy rain.

Thanks so much all, You’ve eased my mind a lot!
