How much of what size baby clothes to buy?!

Good morning all

I am starting to collect some baby clothes and just wanted some advice.

How many sleep suits and vests in 'first size/1 month', and 0-3 did you/will you get to begin with? Did anyone bother with 'newborn' size?

Baby isn't due until end of the summer but I'm trying to make a list and get a bit more organised. I do have 3 other children but it's been a LONG time and I can't remember what I did 7, 10 and 13 years ago 😆 They all weighed from 7-9 pounds.

Mine was 6lb 7oz. She didn't wear 0-3 until she was about 8 weeks and was still wearing them at 6 months.

She wore small baby and newborn. I would go with quite a lot of newborn but keep tags on incase you have a 10 pounder.

I dont think newborn clothes fit my newborn even the day they were born 🤣

I found 0-3 months they grew out of quickly as well, esp sleep suits if they have longer legs.

i would probably get more 3-6-6/9 month sleep suits.

Probably wont need 0-3 mnth vests if baby is summer born

I’m 30 weeks with my second and I’ve just started buying.

so far, I’ve bought 2 packs of first size sleep suits and 2 packs of first size vests

I also bought the same in 0-3 range.

My DD was 8lb 5 and she didn’t go into 0-3 for a good while. She was petite.

I think it’s best to have a mixture of both. You’ll need 0-3 eventually anyway!

I didn’t buy any ‘first size’ but I did buy up to 1 month stuff and she was in that for about 6 weeks. I think I had about 10 vests and 7 sleepsuits then we bought some more up to 1 month sleepsuits. My baby was born at 40 weeks and weighed 7lb 14oz. She was an august baby so it was really hot and she spent a lot of time in short sleeve rompers/vests x

Really helpful, thanks all

My boy was born in feb and weighed 6lb 14oz

i went stupidly overboard and a lot of things he only worn once. Defo recommend sleepsuits rather than outfits as they are a faff. Also ones with built in hand mitts - some mamas and pappas didn’t which was annoying.

I bought a lot of long sleeve vests to go underneath and never used them, went straight for short sleeve

we used newborn for maybe 2 weeks, 0-1 maybe 3 weeks and 0-3 til he was around 12 weeks. Mine seem to last longer in 0-3 and now we’re in 3-6 but he’s only 4 months and the rate he’s growing won’t be in these much longer. Have a look on Vinted. I got alot of brand new things with labels still on around half price of normal shops!

Personally I didn’t buy any newborn or 0-1 month clothes, I had a feeling my boy was going to be big and he was, 9lb 9oz so he was straight into 0-3. That being said, I think if I was doing it again, I’d buy a few 0-1 month vests and babygrows because you just don’t know what size baby you’re going to get! I wouldn’t panic too much, every supermarket stocks baby clothes so as long as you have a few 0-1 month vests and babygrows, you can always nip out to buy more (or send your husband!) when you know who you’re buying for 😊 how exciting!

@H44123 thanks, I'm all over Vinted at the moment 👍🏼 I wish this was a thing when I had my others.

I don't anticipate this baby being smaller than 8lbs tbh so looks like I'm going to have to get a mix of sizes!

My son was 7lb5oz at birth and 0-3 would've absolutely drowned him Smile he wore newborn for the first probably 2 weeks ish, then into a mix of 0-1 month (only had a few vests in that size nothing else) and 0-3 (which were still huge!)

Moni81 · 27/05/2023 19:38

I bought maybe only 5 plain sleepsuits in size up to month just in case. Then lots of 0-3, 3-6 sleepsuits and short sleeve vests, maybe around 20-30 each but I'm shopping on vinted so didn't break bank lol plus will be able to do washing less often. Some outfits too and pramsuits, I know will not use them much but it was so cheap and cute that I didn't mind to go a bit crazy, will resell it anyway. It's my third child after long break, with my teen girls I didn't have chance to get such nice clothes, accessories etc, all it was supermarket what I could afford so really enjoying this time☺️

It’s honestly really hard to say. As many as possible? 😂 Mine was an average sized baby and was in newborn for about 4 weeks. I would definitely get some newborn stuff because everyone says they don’t wear it long and some babies are too big, but even really big babies will wear it for a few days. And they can go through a lot if they poo through nappies and things. I’d try a couple of different brands as just like women’s clothes, they all size differently. oh and I mostly stuck to babygrows early on. You don’t want to deal with anything complicated!

If your baby goes through 2 or 3 outfits a day that’s basically 21 outfits a week! just something to think about. I got heaps off ebay/Vinted and lots of ncie packs of babygrows. But also try not to worry as you can buy more when they’re born.

Our baby was 7lb 3 when born and at almost 7 weeks is 11lb 8. We've been using newborn all this time and he's only just growing out of them (they tend to go up to about 10lbs). It will depend where you're buying things from - I've found some shops make roomier clothes than others. Supermarket clothes seem to be smaller than next, m&s, Mothercare. Matalan has been mixed.

We've had a lot of days at home since baby's arrival and we didn't want to waste the "nice" things sitting in or just wearing them once so have rotated quite a few of the basics and returned some of the nicer things for bigger sizes so we get use of them.

Baby has also started struggling with reflux and wind resulting in lots of sick and often needs changed several times a day so I wouldn't buy too many expensive things because they're unlikely to be worn very long before being changed.
