Hi al I’m 28 weeks as of today. I’ve been prescribed 200mg iron 3 x times a day as of yesterday due to very low iron. I’ve woken up tonight to period pain like cramps and overwhelming need to do a poo at 4am us this just because I’ve suddenly started the tablets? I can’t sleep and when I sit in bed I cant relax

Call maternity triage. It could be indigestion from the iron tablets or it could be the start of labour.

I think it was just side effects from the tablets 🥴 I thought they were supposed to bung you up not the opposite! A bit wary of taking them today but my hb is at 7.8 so I don’t think I’m going to get away with it..

Iron can give you diarrhoea. I’d start with one a day and build up, but you might not be able to tolerate 3, I couldn’t.

Don’t forget to eat dark green leafy veg and red meat.
And take your iron with vitamin c, like orange juice, and avoid tea/coffee for an hour either side.

I didn’t know I could build it up I might try that as I don’t feel anaemic.. honestly felt awful but stating to feel a bit more normal now might try just taking one today

Also, don't be alarmed if you have increased nausea or black stools. These are both seen with iron tablets.

Yes I was aware of the black stools I think ive just got a stronger dose than I did with last pregnancy.. I’ve got HG so nausea is the norm for me lol however I have anti sickness for that thank goodness. Who said pregnancy was beautiful!
