Sent for growth scan at 31 weeks...

Hi, I'm 31+6 (first pregnancy) and had a midwife appointment today where they measured my fundal height. When the midwife said "32cm" I breathed a sigh of relief as I'd read that fundal height should correspond with number of weeks gestation.

However, when she plotted it on the graph it came out as in the top 5% and I've been sent for a growth scan next week to see if/why baby measuring large :( now I'm freaking out something is wrong! Maybe I've given myself gestational diabetes from all those creme eggs I've been stuffing (although test at 28 weeks was normal). Or maybe it's something worse...

Did anybody measure similar at the same stage and was everything ok in the end?

I did and it was all fine ( she was just a big baby!) 8 lb 11

MomentOhm · 17/04/2023 14:16

Hey congratulations 🎉
My son was measuring in the 99th percentile and I had extra scans, and 2 tests for GD all came back fine. We thought he may be huge when born but Came out weighing 7lbs 7.

cm1255 · 17/04/2023 14:17

I did the whole way through my last trimester. Ended up induced over concerns of how the big the baby was - he ended up a very average 7lb 5! Try not worry (easier said than done I know) fundal measurements aren’t always an accurate guide.

Kickingupmerrybehaviour · 17/04/2023 14:20

Yes with both of mine they queried it and I had lots of growth scans. They were both born at 39 weeks and both weighed a perfectly respectable 7lb 1 oz.

PfizerFan · 17/04/2023 14:20

Thanks all... Growth scan has been booked in for next week so fingers crossed it's all ok :(

DD was 98th centile for waist measurement and I went through GD tests and extra scans. She was a very petite 6lb at birth and has grown along the 9th centile. I worried for weeks and cut out all sugar/refined carbs but she was absolutely fine.

pizzaunicorn · 17/04/2023 14:23

I measured 42 weeks by then and had a 12lb baby.

You should be fine

GoodChat · 17/04/2023 14:23

My midwife was crap at measuring so I was sent for growth scans about 6 times in the last 12 weeks. Don't worry!

LG93 · 17/04/2023 14:30

From someone who had growth scans in both pregnancies, one for being too small (induced at 37 weeks and born 6lb9 so not excessively small!) And one for being too big (induced at 40weeks and 8lb13, so not huge!) I would take the whole thing with a bit of a pinch of salt - it's all a bit of a guessing game. You're early enough that if needs be they can monitor and see a trend (if there is one eg if growth is rapidly accelerating) but as I found out someone has got to be the top/bottom centiles as that's how they work and that doesn't mean anything is wrong ☺️

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 17/04/2023 14:33

I had this at the same gestation with my first. Was told she was a giant and terrified half to death by a consultant who said he would be surprised if I didn't end up with a C section.

She was 7lb 5oz and I didn't even need any stitches 😂

I was later told in my second pregnancy by another consultant that I had unusually thick and large hip bones, which can upset the way they determine the baby's size in utero 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't know how true that is. I do know that I had nightmares for nine weeks worrying about my giant baby though!

PfizerFan · 17/04/2023 14:35

The trainee midwife who took the measurements thought 32 weeks was second trimester! Didn't fill me with confidence. So I hope she just measured it wrong. Well I guess I will find out in one week...

From 30 weeks I was sent for scans every 2 weeks because my bump was measured by someone different every time, so it never plotted nicely on the chart. Everything was fine. Was nice to get extra scans (especially as it was the only time I left the house - yay lockdown) x

Moosh18 · 17/04/2023 15:13

Hey @PfizerFan so I had my 28 week midwife apt and I was measuring 32cm! So 4 weeks ahead!!!! Totally off the chart.... like way way off it, my previous pregnancy baby was measuring small so had to have growth scans for opposite reason,

I had a growth scan last week and am showing "excess fluid" around the baby, but only by a small amount, baby is measuring in 60th percentile! They are sending me for a gestational diabetes test on Friday to be on the safe side, but honestly I'm so so confused as I think my bump is a lot smaller then previous pregnancy! 🤔

PfizerFan · 17/04/2023 15:39

Good luck @Moosh18 let us know how it goes. It is all so confusing!

Same here as a PP. They thought my daughter was large at 31 week appointment. I really didn't have a big bump. They sent me for a growth scan and all ok. She was actually 6lbs 1 born at 40 + 2 so on the smaller side. I had 3 different midwives measure me and I think that caused the issue X

Cdoc · 17/04/2023 19:24

I measured 90-95th centile from 28 weeks (up from 50th at 20 weeks) and had fortnightly growth scans from 30 weeks, though it walls the head and abdomen measuring biggest. They did induce me the day after my due date due to predicting 9lb+ baby but baby was born on the 75th centile at 8lb. 3oz. My fundal height was huge throughout but it wasn’t an issue in the end 😊

Littlelighthouse · 17/04/2023 20:14

I never had my fundal height doing as I was having growth scans for other reasons anyway. At 28 weeks DD was bang on the 50th percentile. Had another scan at 30 weeks and she'd jumped to the 90th. At 32 weeks she jumped again to the 95th for AC. I then had the GD test and I did have GD. It terrified me, but it was well managed. She stayed on the 95th percentile and we were told she'd be way over 9lb. She was born at 39 weeks weighing 8lb 6oz.
Growth scans and fundal height are not know for their accuracy (my consultant actually told me this too!) They're just an estimation. My cousin had the opposite to me and was told her baby would be 6lb and he was 7lb 8oz!
Just guesses 🙂

Covidwoes · 17/04/2023 20:46

In both pregnancies, I measured around 7 weeks behind at full term and had many growth scans, as midwives kept getting alarmed. DD1 weighed just under 7lbs. DD2 weighed 7lbs8. I just had teeny bumps!

annlee3817 · 17/04/2023 21:48

I didn't have fundal height measured this time as was getting regular growth scans due to my age. DD2 was measuring big, was told to expect a 9lber at 39 weeks, she was born at 39+5 weighing 7lbs 9. Scans with DD1 showed she was 7lbs 4 on her due date, she arrived at 40+5 weighing 7lbs 6, so fairly accurate that time.

PfizerFan · 28/04/2023 16:39

Phew! Baby measured pretty much bang on the 50th percentile at the scan. Anxiety averted, back on the creme eggs. Until the next appointment, that is...
