Glucose test drink - what flavour is it?

I have the test for GD this week and I am already worried about the drink… I hate fruit flavoured drinks.

Especially orange flavour which I am worried the glucose drink is going to be.

Do you get a choice of flavour? How much of the drink is there?

I actually don’t think I’ll be able to keep it down if it’s a full sized orange flavoured drink.

You have a phobia of drinking fruit drinks? Surely this has got to be a joke 😂 dear lord

Yes, from childhood. I know it sounds silly but it is true and real. It never usually impacts my life because I never have to drink / eat anything fruity (until now).

Hopefully it isn’t lucozade, hopefully it’s the flavourless one but anyway I’ll get it down for the sake of the baby. Thank you everyone.

1st pregnancy - it was a orange flavour drink not too syrupy.
2nd pregnancy - different trust, it was a raspberry flavour syrupy type drink.

Both times not the best but totally fine really

I honestly can't remember what flavour mine was, but it was almost impossible to drink in the time they expect and to keep it in. I have no idea how mums with any sort of sickness do it. It is so awfully sweet that you can nearly swallow it and you feel really ill very quickly. If you throw it up then they can't do the tests and rebook you to try again.

Just another afternoon of pregnancy joy to get through. One of many many such afternoons. Worth it when you hold the baby though, OP, I promise Wink

This is what pissed me off - they were happy to do the simple blood test back in covid times, now they are happy for you to hang around a hospital for 2 hours again after struggling to drink this vile sugary crap 😫

God I hadn’t even twigged it was a covid thing

embarrassed23 · 28/03/2023 14:28

@Jamontoast1 fair enough! If it makes you feel any better I had the GD test and I barely remember the drink, it was a cup or something I don't remember the taste of. It wasn't a big cup and it wasn't very sugary or bad tasting. You can down it in literally less than 30 seconds

Hatscats · 28/03/2023 14:29

yep, apparently in covid times the test wasn’t worth hanging around a waiting room for 2 hours incase you caught it! I had the simple blood test version with my first too.

RecklessBlackberries · 28/03/2023 14:54

I did the test in 2021 and got the raspberry drink someone posted before. It was gross but not intolerable. I had to sit in my car for 2 hours afterwards due to covid.

Mine tasted exactly like a capri sun - Was totally fine

Penny5534 · 28/03/2023 15:37

@Hatscats I had the random blood test instead of the GTT when pregnant during covid. When seeing the consultant post birth she advised it was fairly likely I had gestational diabetes that was missed. She said she'd been part of the research group looking at how effective the random blood tests had been instead of the GTT and that they had been pretty shit so to ensure I had GTT in my next pregnancy. So that might be why there was a fairly big shift back to the GTT.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 28/03/2023 15:45

Had one yesterday. Think it depends on the trust. Mine was in a pouch with spout like a kids yogurt or capri sun. Slightly thick, room temperature synthetic orange flavour and super sweet. It was disgusting. But, they give you 10 mins to drink it. Baby was going crazy about 20 mins after finishing it. Think baby had a buzz on.

RayahB · 29/03/2023 08:11

Mine was like a very sweet capri sun and came in the same type of 'bag'. The more I thought of it, the more I struggled to keep it down but I think that's because I had worked myself up about it. It was fine. I struggled more with having to drink it so quickly. I can't drink fast if I simply don't need a drink 🤷‍♀️

SpideysMummy · 29/03/2023 08:48

HbA1c was a common blood test instead of OGTT during covid to minimise people sitting around in the hospital. It’s nowhere near as accurate at picking up GDM which is why my hospitals have shifted back to the good old sugar drink business.

Some trusts test everyone for GDM, and some will only test those who are high risk. If you have no specific risk factors (ethnicity, BMI, symptoms, family history), then you could consider declining the test.

Alternatively, you could ask to do home blood glucose monitoring (finger prick testing) for a week. This is even more accurate than a GTT anyway. This is what we would usually offer women who were unsuitable for a GTT in my trust (hyperemesis, previous gastric surgery, allergies, phobias etc).

I did it twice, mine was orange flavour. It was a bit yuk but to be honest I was really thirsty so just necked it

qpmz · 29/03/2023 09:07

It's only a one off drink and it's a small amount. Can't believe you're bothered by this! You need to just do it, it's not exactly a pint of dishwater!

I’m well aware I need to do it, and will obviously do it.

I have a childhood phobia of fruit drinks, so wanted to mentally prepare myself, I’d actually rather it be a pint of dishwater!

Mine was in a capri sun type bag and tasted the same. The more j thought about it the more it made me want to be sick. The very helpful midwife stood over me barking that if I was sick I'd have to come back another day and do it all again. You've just got to get on with it I'm afraid,

CharlotteDoyle · 29/03/2023 10:21

Plug your nose as you down it, if you are that bothered by the taste. But yeah time to man up! As a new parent, fruit juice will be the least of your worries

KoalaMumma · 31/03/2023 00:43

Mine was about 3 weeks ago and tasted like cloudy bitter lemon squash. The problem I had with is that the 1st sip wasn't too bad. But that was because the sugar had sunk to the bottom of the cup! The top was just mildly flavoured water and the bottom was gooey syrup.

MamaStokes24 · 19/01/2024 20:34

I had a raspberry flavour, I think they all must be that flavour maybe I'm not sure 🤔 my friend has her test soon too and she was asking the same on if you can choose the flavour. I liked it though, it's a bit gloopy but if you keep shaking the bottle it's not as gloopy.
