I ate unpasteurised soft cheese and I’m freaking out

Please tell me it’ll be ok…. I’m 16 weeks into what is pretty much a miracle pregnancy, so anxiety is already high. I’m currently in Rome and ate a whole piece of (what I didn’t know was) unpasturised mozzarella in a restaurant and now I’m terrified. Anyone have any pearls of positive wisdom? Would so appreciate them… thanks

I really wouldn’t worry, the risk of listeria is incredibly low and unlikely. Hope you are enjoying Italy, very jealous here!

Twoinapod · 11/03/2023 22:38

It’s only not recommended because of a slightly higher risk of listeria. But it’s still a very low risk. Try hard not to panic and enjoy your time in Rome. The food hygiene levels in a restaurant will be very high and it will have been stored safely

I lived in Rome for nearly 4 years and never once got food poisoning. They are an extremely food proud culture! As the other posters have said, the only reason unpasteurised dairy isn't recommended is the increased risk of illness. You should be absolutely fine! Also super jealous of you being in Bella Roma right now! Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Ohhh so jealous of your Italian adventure - love love love Italy 😍 especially the food! The cheese would've been cooked through too at a super high temperature in a proper pizza oven so I think you'll be absolutely fine! Enjoy the rest of your holiday 😊

Sadly it was cold and in a salad 😔

Ah sorry, I read mozzarella & Italy and immediately think pizza 🙄😂 as others have said, the risk is very low and restaurant standards likely high so you probably have nothing to worry about 😊

Yourteaisgettingcold · 12/03/2023 12:06

The risk is so so so low, you'll be fine.
